Preity Zinta, who welcomed twins Jai and Gia with husband Gene Goodenough in 2021 via surrogacy, recently revealed her journey to parenthood. In an interview with Vogue India, Zinta shared that she underwent multiple IVF cycles before deciding on surrogacy.

The actor candidly discussed the emotional toll of IVF treatment, admitting that it was challenging to maintain her public persona of being a “sunshine person” during such a difficult time. She said, “I have good days and bad days just like everyone else. Sometimes it’s a struggle to always be happy-go-lucky in real life, especially when you’re going through a tough phase. I used to feel like that during my IVF cycles.” She added, “It was very difficult to be smiley and nice all the time. Sometimes I just wanted to bang my head on the wall and cry or not talk to anybody. So yes, it has to be a balancing act for all actors.”

Preity Zinta also addressed the challenges faced by women in the entertainment industry, particularly in terms of balancing their careers with family life. She acknowledged the biological clock and the pressure women often feel to have children at a certain age.

Dr Ashima Ranjan, Consultant Psychiatrist at Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, Noida, shared navigating the emotional landscape of fertility struggles and the decision to pursue surrogacy is both complex and deeply personal. This journey often involves a rollercoaster of hope and disappointment, which can lead to significant emotional strain.

She added that many individuals face challenges such as depression, anxiety, and a sense of isolation throughout the process. The recurring cycles of optimism followed by setbacks can be particularly disheartening.

How to address these challenges

Addressing these emotional challenges is as vital as focusing on the medical aspects of fertility treatment. It’s essential to offer comprehensive mental health support to complement medical interventions, Dr Ranjan said. Understanding the impact of unsuccessful IVF attempts, potential pregnancy losses, and the physical toll of treatments is crucial.

Acknowledge and address these feelings by seeking professional counseling, which can offer valuable coping strategies and a safe space to explore emotions. Support groups can provide a sense of community and help alleviate feelings of isolation by connecting individuals with others facing similar struggles. Incorporating practices such as meditation and mindfulness can also aid in managing stress and enhancing overall well-being.

Remember, there is no universal solution for building a family. Patience with oneself and the process is essential. Open communication with partners and trusted loved ones can help ease the emotional burden. Ultimately, making informed decisions in collaboration with medical professionals, while prioritising mental health, is crucial for navigating this challenging journey.
