Priyanka Chopra, despite her global stardom, remains deeply connected to her Indian roots. Known for sharing her “desi nuskhe” (home remedies) with fans, the actor recently revealed another secret to boosting her immunity.

In an interview with Vogue India, Chopra shared her daily morning ritual, “Right now, I’m drinking warm water, with ginger, turmeric, lemon and honey first thing in the morning to boost my immunity, as I’m filming almost every day and cannot afford to get sick because that will derail the schedule.”

Does it truly work as well as it sounds? According to dietician Suhani Seth Agarwal, Head of Dietetics at Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, Noida, this traditional remedy can support the immune system, though it shouldn’t be seen as a cure-all.

The ingredients and their benefits

Ginger is packed with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. This, in turn, strengthens the immune system, says Dt Agarwal. Additionally, ginger aids digestion and circulation, which are crucial for overall health.

Turmeric, rich in curcumin, is a potent anti-inflammatory agent. Curcumin’s antioxidant effects help modulate the immune system, making it a valuable component of this drink, according to Agarwal.

Lemon offers a healthy dose of vitamin C, essential for white blood cell production. White blood cells play a key role in defending the body against infections, explains Dt Agarwal.

Honey, with its natural antimicrobial properties, helps protect the body from infections. It also soothes sore throats and can act as a natural cough suppressant.

Does the nuskha actually boost immunity?

While Dt Agarwal acknowledges the benefits of these ingredients, she emphasises that this drink is not a replacement for a balanced diet or a medical treatment. “The benefits are mild, but regular consumption as part of a healthy routine can support immune resilience,” she says. This means that while Priyanka’s morning drink can contribute to general wellness, it’s not a quick fix for serious health issues.

Incorporating this drink into your routine over the long term can gradually improve immune function. Just remember, it’s not a substitute for medical care, but rather a small part of a broader health strategy.
