On a recent episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 16 hosted by veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan, a question about Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore became the stumbling block for a contestant aiming for a Rs 25 lakh prize.

Shreem Sharma, a student of astrology, had played skillfully until he was faced with a question that stumped him: “The name of which of these locations was changed to Tagore Square for a day during the centenary celebrations of Rabindranath Tagore?”

The options were:

A) Red Square in Moscow,
B) Times Square in New York,
C) Trafalgar Square in London, and
D) St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City.

Unable to decide and with no lifelines left, Sharma opted to quit, taking home Rs 12.5 lakh. The correct answer, Bachchan revealed, was Times Square, New York

Times Square is known worldwide for its electric energy, massive digital billboards, and as a global stage where art, culture, and history collide. But what makes it an ideal place for a tribute to a visionary poet from another continent? We explore the rich symbolism of Times Square and why it was chosen for this special celebration.

DK Ghatani, travel consultant at Sikkim Expeditions, says, “Times Square, often called ‘The Crossroads of the World,’ is a globally recognised symbol of New York City and one of the most visited tourist attractions worldwide. It is known for its bright neon lights, massive digital billboards, bustling crowds, and vibrant atmosphere that captures the essence of New York City’s energy and spirit. Historically, Times Square has been a hub for arts, culture, and entertainment, playing a central role in the city’s development as a cultural capital.”

Why the Times Square for Tagore’s centenary?

Ghatani tells indianexpress.com, “Rabindranath Tagore was one of India’s most celebrated poets, thinkers, and cultural icons. His centenary celebration in 1961 was a significant global event, and Times Square, with its status as a cultural hub, was chosen to honour him.”

The choice of Times Square underscored Tagore’s international appeal and influence as a global literary figure whose works transcend national and cultural boundaries, he continues. “It was a way to acknowledge his contributions to world literature and his advocacy for unity and understanding between Eastern and Western cultures. The celebration in such a prominent and culturally diverse location as Times Square emphasised Tagore’s message of cross-cultural dialogue and harmony.”

Iconic public squares’ role in international cultural diplomacy

Iconic public squares such as the Times Square, Trafalgar Square in London, Red Square in Moscow, and many others, serve as platforms for cultural diplomacy by hosting international cultural festivals, art installations, and public events that promote cross-cultural understanding and dialogue, says Ghatani. “These spaces allow countries to showcase their heritage and values to a global audience, fostering goodwill and soft power through cultural exchange.”

What makes Times Square a must-visit destination for travellers

Times Square is a must-visit destination in New York City, agrees Ghatani, known for its vibrant atmosphere and iconic features. The dazzling lights and massive billboards create a sensory overload that captures New York’s fast-paced energy.

As the heart of the city’s entertainment district, Times Square offers world-class Broadway shows, cinemas, and performance spaces. Its cultural melting pot includes street performers and vendors, reflecting the global diversity of New York.

Famous for events like the New Year’s Eve ball drop, Times Square also offers diverse shopping and dining options. For many, it symbolises ambition and the American dream, embodying New York City’s unique spirit.
