Acid reflux is a common digestive issue that affects millions of people worldwide, prompting many to seek natural remedies for relief.

Among the various home treatments circulating on social media, one particular suggestion by content creator Kirti Tewani has gained attention — drinking water infused with coriander seeds each morning. 

In a reel posted on Instagram, she says, “Never go to bed without soaking one tablespoon of coriander seeds if you are someone who suffers from acid reflux or any sort of indigestion.”

This simple concoction can potentially prevent chronic acid reflux, but is there any merit to this remedy? 

Kanikka Malhotra, consultant dietician and certified diabetes educator says, “Coriander seed water holds some promise for digestive health. Studies suggest it might stimulate digestive enzymes, potentially aiding digestion and reducing bloating and indigestion. However, its effectiveness for chronic acid reflux is less clear. For some, it might even worsen symptoms by increasing stomach acid production.”

Vedika Premani, clinical dietician, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai, adds, “Coriander seeds have multiple health benefits and can be consumed anytime of the day.”

*Soothing Discomfort: There’s some anecdotal evidence that coriander seed water eases bloating and indigestion.

*Worsening Reflux: For some, coriander seeds might worsen acid reflux. This is because they may stimulate the production of stomach acid, which can back up into the oesophagus and cause heartburn.

According to Malhotra, here are some specific considerations or contraindications for individuals with chronic acid reflux when incorporating coriander seed water into their daily routine.

Dosage

*Start Low: Begin with a small amount of coriander seeds (around ½ teaspoon) steeped overnight in water. This allows for a gradual introduction and helps assess your tolerance.

*Monitor Response: Pay close attention to how your body reacts. If symptoms worsen, discontinue use.

Preparation

*Soaking vs. Boiling: Soaking the seeds overnight is a gentler method compared to boiling, which might extract more potent compounds that could irritate the digestive tract.

Contraindications and interactions

*Medications: Coriander can interact with certain medications, so consult your doctor if you take any prescriptions, especially blood thinners or medications metabolised by the liver.

*Pre-existing Conditions: If you have any underlying health conditions, especially liver or kidney disease, discuss incorporating coriander seed water with your healthcare provider first.

Other natural remedies and conventional treatments for managing chronic acid reflux

Malhotra says, “If you’re looking for natural remedies to manage chronic acid reflux, there are several excellent Indian herbal options. Tulsi leaves, with their stomach-soothing properties, are believed to reduce inflammation and irritation in the digestive tract.” 

Mint tea, a popular coolant in Ayurveda, offers carminative properties that help expel gas and relieve bloating. Fennel seeds, with their antispasmodic properties, might relax the oesophagal sphincter, potentially preventing acid reflux

Cumin seeds, another carminative spice, can aid digestion and reduce gas, while also possibly stimulating digestive enzyme production and reducing the need for excess stomach acid. 

Finally, Malhotra adds that ginger, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, can soothe digestive tract irritation and may even decrease stomach acid production. “While these herbs are generally safe, it’s crucial to consult your healthcare provider before incorporating them into your routine.”
