Chukku kaapi or sukku kaapi, a traditional South Indian beverage made with dry ginger (chukku) and black coffee, is often consumed for its potential health benefits. Popular in traditional medicine as ‘kashyam’, it is often advised for relief from non-serious monsoon-related illnesses, including by lifestyle physician Dr Achyuthan Eswar who suggested kickstarting the day with such a spiced drink to feel fresh and energised in the morning.

“It’s high in antioxidants and a great way to start your day,” Dr Eswar mentioned on Instagram.

Benefits

Dr Rituja Ugalmugle, internal medicine, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central pointed out that scientific evidence specifically supporting this claim is limited. However, individual components of chukku kaapi have been studied for their potential weight loss benefits, and to keep monsoon illnesses away, said Dr Ugalmugle.

Dry ginger (chukku): Ginger has been shown to have potential weight loss benefits due to its effects on metabolism and appetite suppression. Studies suggest that ginger can increase thermogenesis (production of heat in the body) and fat oxidation, which may contribute to weight loss,” said Dr Ugalmugle.

Black coffee: Coffee, due to its caffeine content, can enhance metabolism and increase the rate at which the body burns fat. It can also improve exercise performance and endurance, which might aid in weight management, mentioned Dr Ugalmugle.

Despite these potential benefits, the overall impact of chukku kaapi on health would depend on various factors, including an individual’s overall diet, lifestyle, and metabolic health. Moreover, excessive consumption of caffeinated beverages can lead to negative side effects, such as anxiety, insomnia, and digestive issues, said Dr Ugalmugle.

Experts suggest that it helps with mild throat aches, coughs, and colds that are often associated with the monsoon. “Try having a cup every day. But don’t overdo it as it may cause digestive issues,” said Dr Ugalmugle.

For a comprehensive approach to health, it’s essential to maintain a balanced diet, engage in regular physical activity, and consult with healthcare professionals or registered dietitians.
