While coffee can be a great stimulant for boosting your energy in the morning, it isn’t always the healthiest option. Even if you aren’t the buzziest bee on social media, you must be aware that there are plenty of alternatives for caffeine to elevate your energy levels. We recommend this dietician-approved lemon balm tea to replace your caffeine temptations.

For this simple lemon balm tea, all you’ll need to do, is steep 1-2 tsp dried lemon balm leaves in boiling water for 5-10 minutes. Next, add lemon or honey to taste.

Why lemons, though?

Well, lemons are “high in water content”, says Kannika Malhotra, Dietician, and Diabetes educator, which can help combat dehydration, a common cause of fatigue. They’re also rich in antioxidants which support overall health, including immune function, which can indirectly affect energy levels.

Caffeine primarily “stimulates the nervous system”, leading to a quick but temporary energy surge. In contrast, morning tonics like lemon balm teas, particularly those containing “adaptogens”, influence the body’s hormonal response to stress, promoting a more balanced energy output. Additionally, many herbs support overall health and well-being, which can indirectly contribute to sustained energy levels.

What are the drawbacks of drinking coffee every day?

“Increased risk of heart disease”, says Kannika, “high blood pressure” and “anxiety” when consumed in excess, are the resulting factors. Disrupted sleep patterns, dependency and withdrawal symptoms can also arise. Moreover, increased risk of “osteoporosis” is an additional by product which can occur. Many herbs in these tonics also work synergistically to provide a sustained energy release, promoting alertness and focus without the jitters often associated with caffeine.
