Roshni Chopra swears by sage smudging for positivity; We find out if it really works

Have you ever heard of the spiritual practice of sage smudging? This healing technique has gained popularity as a ritualistic practice for cleansing spaces and individuals of negative energy. 

Television actor Roshni Chopra has championed its use in her Instagram post recently. Touting its ability to bring more positivity in a person’s life, she says that it can help “release negativity, stagnant energy, emotional blocks and nazar (evil eye)”. 

“You can do this yourself — or have someone’s help,” she adds. In her post, she also provides positive affirmations encouraging her followers to embrace positivity and let go of negativity.

Does the practice of sage smudging work?

Sage smudging wasn’t commonly heard of before, but has become increasingly mainstream today. However, questions remain about its efficacy in weeding out negativity. 

Dr Madhu Kotiya, a psychic counsellor and spiritual healer agrees, “From a scientific or evidence-based perspective, the practice of sage smudging — where dried sage is burned to cleanse a space or individual of negative energies — lacks robust clinical studies to conclusively prove its efficacy.”

However, she argues that some research suggests that burning certain herbs, including sage, can have antimicrobial properties, potentially purifying the air of harmful bacteria. “This could indirectly contribute to an improved sense of well-being.” 

Many people report feeling lighter, more peaceful, and less burdened by emotions after sage smudging, she reveals, which could also be attributed to the placebo effect, where believing in the effectiveness of a ritual enhances its perceived benefits.

Psychological mechanisms behind using positive affirmations alongside sage smudging

“The use of positive affirmations alongside sage smudging can be quite powerful from a psychological standpoint. Positive affirmations help in reprogramming the mind by replacing negative thoughts with positive ones, thereby fostering a mental environment conducive to healing and well-being,” Dr Kotiya asserts.

When combined with the ritualistic act of sage smudging, which many feel symbolically clears the air of past negativity, she discloses that the affirmations can reinforce a sense of starting anew. “This combination can create a powerful psychological framework that supports individuals in letting go of negativity and embracing positive changes.”

Alternative practices that can achieve similar outcomes to sage smudging

For those who may not resonate with or have access to sage, there are several alternative practices that can similarly aid in releasing negativity and refreshing one’s environment. 

For instance, Dr Kotiya advocates the use of sound healing practice with singing bowls or bells to cleanse the space energetically. 

“Essential oils like lavender, rosemary, and cedarwood can be used in diffusers to achieve a purifying effect with aromatic benefits,” she says.

Additionally, she recommends simple rituals like deep cleaning one’s living space or taking a salt bath, that can also serve as effective ways to clear stagnant energies and foster a positive environment.
