Milind Soman swears by this popular fruit for healthy skin

Milind Soman is not only known for his endurance level but also his charismatic and age-defying looks. But turns out that the model swears by an extremely basic and simple skincare routine, and also avoids artificial cleansing soaps. “I don’t use sunscreen. I have never used sunscreen. I don’t use soap. I don’t use any artificial means to clean my skin. I use a shampoo sometimes but that’s the time if I have oiled my hair,” said Milind, whose latest self-help book — Keep Moving — details his tryst with fitness along with the journeys of his mother Usha Soman, and wife Ankita Konwar.

Milind, 58, added, “If I am eating papaya, I take the skin and rub it on my face.”

Taking a cue from his revelation, we asked an expert whether such a basic routine suffice.

Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics apprised us that sunscreen is used as a tool to safeguard the skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. It acts as a shield and absorbs UV rays before they reach your skin “reducing the chances of sunburn and skin cancer”. “Prolonged exposure to UV rays can interfere with your skin’s DNA, increasing the risk of skin cancer. UV light has the potential to damage collagen and elastin, a type of protein that is responsible for making your skin appear soft and supple. Not using sunscreen at all can lead to several skin concerns, which can be permanent and even life-threatening,” said Dr Kapoor.

Is applying papaya peel a good practice?

Rich in papain enzyme, it gently exfoliates, removes dead skin cells and reveales a brighter complexion, added Dr Kapoor. “Papaya is also rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as antioxidants that help protect the skin from environmental damage and promote skin repair and rejuvenation. Additionally, papaya contains hydrating properties that can help keep the skin moisturised and supple,” said Dr Kapoor.

However, people with sensitive, acne-prone skin should avoid applying papaya as it can lead to concerns like inflammation, increased sensitivity, itching, and burning sensation, Dr Kapoor mentioned.
