At 62, Suniel Shetty is ageing like fine wine. The secret? The Dhadkan actor’s lifestyle — no tobacco, no drinking, no late nights, and no cold drinks. Yes, you read that right!

“No tobacco, no alcohol, no late nights, no sugar, no cold drinks. It’s been more than 10-12 years since I have left Coke, Pepsi. I can have nimbu paani or lemon water. It is not because I want to make a statement. But I genuinely don’t like them and they don’t suit me,” Shetty told comedian Bharti Singh and her husband and screenwriter Haarsh Limbachiyaa on their podcast.

According to the actor, fondly called Anna, the most important thing to stay fit is one’s diet. “I eat my food according to calories. Oil content per day is 15-18 grams and 15-16 grams of sugar. Currently, even that isn’t there. But I eat a balanced meal with greens and protein,” shared Shetty.

Impressed with his revelation, we wanted to understand how not having cold drinks is good for your body.

Cold drinks can be tempting and satisfying, especially in the scorching heat. It is often preferred by people as a beverage during meals due to its refreshing properties, said Dr Aniket Mule, consultant internal medicine, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road. However, there are more side effects of drinking cold drinks than benefits.

“Various properties found in cold drinks can take a toll on your overall well-being. These drinks contain a higher quantity of added sugar which can potentially increase the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. It is made with harmful ingredients like artificial sweeteners, phosphoric acid (damages tooth enamel), fructose corn syrup (causes cavities), acesulfame potassium (carcinogenic), and carbon dioxide (makes your teeth sensitive to hot and cold food/beverages),” said Dr Mule.

Cold drinks can narrow the blood vessels making it challenging for food and beverages to pass through the stomach, added the expert.

Dr Mule stressed that the harmful effects of cold drinks are obesity, diabetes, digestive problems, stomach pain, sore throat, cough, cold, heart disease, and worsened oral health.

“It is crucial to avoid drinking cold drinks regularly for the sake of your health. Staying persistent in staying away from cold drinks can be beneficial in safeguarding you from getting affected by these harmful health concerns,” said Dr Mule.

Opt for healthy beverage alternatives like coconut water, herbal tea, fruit-infused water, vegetable juice, badam milk (almond milk), and buttermilk.
