The journey through cancer treatment often involves physical changes that can be challenging to accept, such as hair loss due to chemotherapy.

Television actor Hina Khan, who revealed that she was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in June this year, has made headlines with her courageous decision to shave off her pixie haircut. In an emotional video shared on Instagram, she highlighted the crucial role that self-acceptance plays in the recovery process.

She said, “You can win this only if you embrace yourself, accept it and I choose to accept my battle scars because I believe if you embrace yourself, you are one step closer towards your healing and I really, really want to heal.”

“I don’t want to go through the process where every time I put my hand in, my hair falls. It’s very stressful, really depressing, I don’t want to go through that. Mujhe usse pehle hi jo mere control mein hai woh steps lene hai (Before that, I want to take the steps that are under my control),” Khan revealed.

Khan stressed on the importance of mental health when going through tough times, adding that as long as one is mentally fit, they will be ten times more fit physically.

She then told her followers about her decision to shave her head, offering motivation to those who are going through the same ordeal. “Embrace this new version of yourself, embrace this new truth, this new journey.”

Khan proceeded to chop the rest of her hair off with a trimmer after stating that she was going to carry herself with a bald head “proudly.”

This approach to dealing with the side effects of cancer treatment goes beyond mere physical appearance; it represents a mindset that can be pivotal in the healing process.

Dr Anitha Bharathan, consultant clinical psychologist and psycho oncology at Cadabams Hospitals Bengaluru, says, “The journey through breast cancer treatment is often marked by physical changes. Hair loss, changes in body shape, and surgical scars can trigger feelings of vulnerability, loss of control, and even grief. However, research and anecdotal evidence alike suggest that embracing these changes, rather than resisting them, can play a crucial role in fostering emotional and psychological resilience during this challenging time.”

Connection between self-acceptance and the overall mental well-being

Hair loss, one of the most visible side effects of cancer treatment, says Dr Bharathan, can be particularly distressing. It’s a tangible reminder of the illness and can shake a woman’s sense of identity and femininity. “However, embracing hair loss, perhaps by choosing to shave their head or wearing stylish scarves or wigs, can empower women to reclaim control and redefine beauty on their own terms.”

She adds, “Research has shown that this acceptance can lead to a decrease in anxiety and depression, and an increase in self-esteem and body image. It allows women to shift their focus away from the physical changes and towards their inner strength and resilience. By acknowledging and embracing these changes, they are no longer defined by their illness, but rather by their courage and determination to overcome it.”

Strategies that can help foster self-acceptance and resilience

While embracing physical changes and cultivating self-acceptance may seem daunting, Dr Bharathan says, there are several strategies and practices that can help:

Mindfulness and Meditation: These practices encourage being present in the moment without judgement, fostering a sense of self-awareness and compassion. By observing thoughts and feelings without getting caught up in them, women can learn to accept their changing bodies and emotions with greater ease.

Support Groups and Counselling: Connecting with others who share similar experiences can be incredibly empowering. Support groups offer a safe space to express feelings, share coping strategies, and realise you’re not alone. Counselling can also provide valuable guidance in navigating emotional challenges and developing self-acceptance.

Creative Expression: Engaging in creative activities like painting, writing, or music can provide an outlet for emotions and help women connect with their inner selves. It can also be a way to express and celebrate their changing bodies in a positive and empowering way.

Focus on Gratitude: Shifting focus towards gratitude for the good things in life, no matter how small, can promote positive emotions and build resilience.

Self-Care: Prioritising self-care activities, such as exercise, healthy eating, and relaxation, can enhance physical and emotional well-being and foster self-acceptance.
