The world of pastry lost one of its most iconic figures with the passing of Roberto Linguanotto, the man credited with creating the beloved dessert, tiramisu. Linguanotto, often referred to as the “father of tiramisu,” breathed his last at the age of 81 after a prolonged illness.

While the exact origins of tiramisu remain shrouded in mystery with different people claiming different things, the dessert is widely credited to Linguanotto, who, along with Alba Campeol, is believed to have created this culinary masterpiece at the Le Beccherie restaurant in Treviso, Italy.

The name “tiramisu” translates to “pick me up” in Italian, a fitting description for this indulgent dessert. Legend has it that the invention of tiramisu was as serendipitous as it is delicious.

While experimenting with ingredients for a vanilla ice cream, Linguanotto inadvertently combined mascarpone cheese, egg yolks, and sugar. The resulting mixture was unexpectedly creamy and indulgent. Recognising the potential of this newfound creation, he and his colleague, Alba Campeol, began to experiment further.

The addition of coffee-soaked ladyfingers added depth and complexity to the dessert, elevating it to a whole new level. A final dusting of cocoa powder completed this culinary masterpiece. First introduced on the menu of Le Beccherie in 1972, tiramisu quickly captured the hearts and palates of food lovers worldwide.
