Ranbir Kapoor was recently spotted taking a stroll with daughter Raha — glimpses of which were widely shared on social media. And while the father-daughter duo posed for the paps, he was asked why she looked so “dull”. Responding, the Brahmastra actor said that he is “all ok, fit and fine” after recovering from dengue, according to paparazzo Viral Bhayani’s team on Instagram.

Taking a cue, we decided to understand more about post-dengue care this monsoon.

Dengue fever, caused by the dengue virus transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes in the tropical and subtropical world, can lead to various post-recovery effects. “These can vary in severity and duration depending on the individual and the severity of the infection,” said Dr L Sudarshan Reddy, senior consultant physician, Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad.

“The common symptoms include muscle, bone, and joint pain, rashes, high fever, throbbing headache, vomiting, and nausea,” said Dr Ranga Santhosh Kumar, consultant general physician and diabetologist, Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad.

Post-dengue effects commonly observed are fatigue and weakness, arthralgias, alopecia, decreased immunity and susceptibility to infections, headaches, cognitive impairment, and mood changes, stress and anxiety, loss of appetite, and nutritional deficiencies, said Dr Kumar.

Dr Reddy explained the common post-effects in detail

Fatigue: Prolonged tiredness and weakness can persist for weeks or even months after recovery, said Dr Reddy.

Joint and muscle pain: Many individuals experience lingering joint and muscle pain, sometimes referred to as “breakbone fever”.

Liver function abnormalities: Liver enzymes can remain elevated for a period after recovery.

Rash: Some people may continue to experience skin rashes after the acute phase of the illness.

Recurrent infections: “There is a risk of severe complications if a person is infected again with a different serotype of the dengue virus,” said Dr Reddy.

Hair loss: Temporary hair loss can occur as the body recovers from the infection.

Anxiety: The stress of the illness, and the recovery process can lead to anxiety as recovery takes longer time in few cases, mentioned Dr Reddy.

According to Dr Kumar, treatment for post-recovery symptoms include good hydration and maintaining good nutrition with fresh fruits, vegetables, and good protein consumption (eggs, legumes, and chicken).

“It’s important to monitor symptoms and consult a doctor or reach the hospital if any severe or unusual symptoms persist,” said Dr Reddy.
