The world of skincare is constantly evolving to formulate newer solutions to combat the increasing skin concerns. From lipsticks to compacts, creams, and sunscreens, there is something for everyone already with more offerings in the pipeline. One new entrant in the market is whipped sunscreen, a relatively new form of sunscreen touted to offer a unique texture compared to traditional creams or lotions.

Intrigued by brands launching it, we consulted experts to understand if we need it in our skincare routines. “It’s characterised by its airy, mousse-like consistency, which often makes it more appealing and easier to apply, especially for those who find traditional sunscreens heavy or greasy,” said Dr Sonali Kohli, consultant dermatologist, Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital.

The primary difference lies in the texture and ease of application, stressed Dr Mandeep Singh, HOD, plastic, dermatology, and cosmetic surgery at Paras Health Gurugram.

Whipped sunscreen is said to be “an innovative advancement in sun protection, combining the efficacy of traditional sunscreens with a lighter, more aesthetically pleasing formulation”. “Its mousse-like texture not only allows for even application, it often feels more comfortable on the skin, encouraging consistent use,” said Dr Kohli.

Additionally, the airy texture can be more enjoyable for children and adults who dislike the thick, sometimes sticky, feel of regular sunscreens. Notably, increased amounts of sunscreen may result in clogged pores, and breakouts, especially for those with sensitive, oily, and acne-prone skin. This is where whipped sunscreen shows promise, experts suggest.

While it doesn’t offer any dermatological advantages, according to Dr Mohna Chauhan, dermatology, Prakash Hospital, its unique texture is “designed to make the experience more fun, similar to how whipped cream is appreciated for its intriguing texture even before it’s tasted”.

Things to keep in mind

However, it is important to note that the efficacy of whipped sunscreen in terms of UV protection is comparable to that of traditional sunscreens, provided it contains the same active ingredients and is applied generously and evenly, said Dr Singh. “It’s crucial to ensure that whipped sunscreen offers broad-spectrum protection with at least SPF 30, as recommended by dermatologists,” explained Dr Kohli.

Regardless of the type, regular and adequate application is key to effective sun protection. “As always, it’s important to reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating to maintain optimal defense against harmful UV rays,” said Dr Kohli.

Don’t forget commonly missed areas such as the ears, back of the neck, hands, feet, and under the straps of clothes or swimwear.
