Can having lemon juice and olive oil on an empty stomach relieve constipation?

Clearing your bowels in the morning is extremely important for overall wellness. But if you struggle to do so, dietitian Sonia Narang shared a “traditional remedy for a bowel movement and skin health”. According to her, one should mix extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice in a glass of water. “Stir well to combine. Drink this mixture first thing in the morning on an empty stomach for best results,” said Narang, adding that results are visible within four weeks.

*Acts as a natural lubricant, helping to ease the passage of stool.

*Stimulates bile production.

*Its healthy fats and antioxidants, such as vitamin E, help moisturise and nourish the skin from within promoting a healthy complexion.

*The citric acid in lemon juice stimulates digestive enzymes, promoting better digestion and bowel movement.

*It is rich in vitamin C, which is crucial for collagen production, helping to maintain skin elasticity and firmness.

*It has natural astringent and brightening properties that can help improve skin tone and reduce appearance of blemishes.

“Starting your day with this mixture helps hydrate your body, which is essential for both digestion and skin health,” Narang wrote on Instagram.

Precautions

*Use in moderation. Excessive intake of lemon juice can erode tooth enamel, and too much olive oil can lead to excessive calorie intake.

*Ensure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients.

*If you have any medical conditions or are on medication, consult with a healthcare professional before starting this regimen.

Does it work?

Taking both these ingredients orally daily can help improve the vitamin C levels in the body; and olive oil is known for its antioxidant properties, said Dr Shireen Furtado, senior consultant, medical and cosmetic dermatology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.

“Lemon juice is rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant that can help protect against sun damage and promote collagen production, potentially leading to a brighter and firmer appearance,” Dr Furtado added.

Apart from this remedy, a balanced healthy diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is also beneficial. “Don’t skip at least 6-7 hours of quality sleep, which helps your skin repair and regenerate, promoting a healthy glow,” said Dr Furtado.
