We could not believe that pregnancy planning and hair wash have a connection, so we asked experts

There are various dos and don’ts when it comes to pregnancy planning: from eating certain foods, and avoiding others to doing exercises. But we just could not wrap our heads around the fact that washing one’s hair can also play a significant role.

According to Dr Priyanka Yadav, a homeopath, one should refrain from washing their hair in the last four days of planning as it reduces progesterone levels — the main hormone required to continue a pregnancy and the growth of the foetus — in the body which leads to a failed implantation. “Low progesterone levels lead to opening of the endometrium lining, which can cause periods, and failed implantation. If you have a cycle of 28-30 days, ensure to not wash your hair from 24-25 day onward. Get a urine pregnancy test done. Your pregnancy will continue,” said Dr Yadav.

She added that once your “HCG levels are stable with medications, you can wash your hair”.

Astonished by this, we reached out to fertility experts.

Quashing the claim, Dr Rajashri Tayshete Bhasale, consultant gyneacologist and obstetrician, laparoscopic surgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road said there is “no direct correlation between hair wash and pregnancy planning”.

“Washing hair is a personal choice and should be done regularly to maintain proper hygiene. It does not affect pregnancy so individuals can continue their hair wash routine without concern. There is no scientific evidence or research to prove the effectiveness of not washing hair during ovulation,” said Dr Bhasale, urging that it is important not to believe everything you read or see online.

Dr Shobha Gupta, medical director and IVF specialist, Mother’s Lap IVF Centre New Delhi and Vrindavan agreed and added that there is no direct scientific connection between pregnancy and hair washing. “Myths and cultural beliefs around this topic might exist, but they lack scientific backing. It’s generally safe to wash your hair during pregnancy planning as long as you’re using products that are safe for you,” said Dr Gupta.
