Laptops and heating pads are harming your skin; here’s how

Of late, an unusual and peculiar skin condition known as ‘toasted skin syndrome’ has been increasingly reported, particularly among individuals who spend extended periods with laptops or other heat-emitting devices resting directly on their laps or legs.

This bizarre phenomenon, characterised by red, splotchy patches resembling a burn or rash, has raised concerns and sparked discussions about the potential risks associated with our modern, technology-driven lifestyles.

Dr Swetha Sridhar, senior consultant dermatologist at Dr Dixit Cosmetology Centre says that the name “might sound quirky, but it’s a genuine concern.”

She adds, “It manifests as a net-like, reddish-brown discoloration on the skin. This happens when the skin is repeatedly exposed to moderate heat over long periods, causing damage to the blood vessels and skin cells.”

Reasons behind the increase in cases of toasted skin syndrome

Dr Sridhar agrees that there has been a noticeable increase in cases of toasted skin syndrome in recent years. “One of the main reasons for this rise is our modern lifestyle and the pervasive use of technology. According to a study by the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, there’s been a significant uptick in cases linked to the frequent use of laptops placed on laps, heating pads, and even car seat warmers,” she informs.

These devices generate consistent, moderate heat, which, over time, can lead to the characteristic skin changes of toasted skin syndrome.

How do modern lifestyle and technology habits contribute to the prevalence of toasted skin syndrome?

Our current lifestyle habits play a big role in the increased prevalence of this condition. Many of us spend long hours working on laptops, often resting them on our thighs. This habit exposes our skin to sustained heat. “Similarly, the use of heating pads for chronic pain relief or comfort, and even the regular use of car seat warmers during colder months, contributes to prolonged heat exposure on certain parts of the body,” says Dr Sridhar.

According to research published in the Dermatology Online Journal, she mentions, the combination of sedentary behaviour and reliance on heat-generating devices has made toasted skin syndrome more common.

Preventive measures

Preventing toasted skin syndrome primarily involves reducing direct, prolonged exposure to heat sources. Here are some practical tips suggested by Dr Sridhar:

Use a laptop stand: Instead of placing your laptop directly on your lap, use a stand or a cooling pad to create a barrier between your skin and the heat.

Limit heating pad use: If you use heating pads, try to limit the duration and frequency of their use. Always place a cloth or towel between the pad and your skin.

Moderate car seat warmers: Use car seat warmers sparingly and avoid prolonged exposure.

If you already notice signs of toasted skin syndrome, she says, such as a persistent, net-like rash, it’s important to take action:

Stop heat exposure: Immediately reduce or eliminate contact with the heat source.

Topical treatments: Over-the-counter creams containing ingredients like aloe vera or corticosteroids can help soothe the skin.

Consult a dermatologist: For persistent cases, it’s best to see a dermatologist. They might recommend treatments such as topical retinoids or laser therapy to improve the appearance of the skin.

“By being mindful of how and where we use heat-emitting devices, we can prevent toasted skin syndrome and keep our skin healthy,” asserts Dr Sridhar.
