You know how some couples stress over picking the perfect wedding date? Radhika Merchant Ambani recently spilled the beans that their wedding weekend wasn’t just picked out of a hat.

In an interview with Vogue, she said, “The dates were strategically chosen from the 12th, 13th, and 14th of July upon the advice of our family pujari, who identified synchronic moments for our celebrations based on auspicious astrological alignments in both my charts as well as Anant’s.”

She added, “It was a meticulous process.”

Her revelation highlights how the Ambanis and Merchants follow the age-old traditions of checking what the planets have to say about prominent occasions like weddings. But, what is the significance of astrological alignments in wedding date selection?

Sidhharrth S Kumaar, an astro numerologist, tells indianexpress.com, “Marriage is one samskaar mentioned in our shastras, and choosing a suitable date adds new positivity to the marriage and assists in ensuring a prosperous and joyous unison of couple from every aspect in life.”

The well crafted muhurat (the auspicious date and time of marriage), suited as per horoscopes of both bride and groom, can enhance their emotional bond and the efforts they put into it, he adds.

Specific astrological factors considered when choosing an auspicious wedding date

“Choosing an auspicious date for a wedding is a multi-dimensional task and needs an in-depth assessment of panchang (astrological calendar) as well as horoscopes,” informs Kumaar.

There are two important steps in curating a suitable wedding date as per astrology:

Universal Muhurat

The word Universal Muhurat focuses on identification of dates which can be recommended for the purpose of marriage.

The essential factor for this is, Tithi, Nakshatra, Lagna, Yoga, Karan, Vaar (weekday), Jupiter and Venus Strength on wedding date, among others.

Personalisation of Muhurat

Personalisation of muhurat means that from the dates when marriage can likely take place, one needs to ascertain whether that date suits the bride and groom or not.

This suitability of date to bride and groom is decided based on Moon, Jupiter, and Venus of both and their suitability to the date.

How modern Indian couples balance traditional astrological considerations with practical logistics when planning their weddings

“Where there is will, there is a way,” says Kumaar. Many young couples are interested in incorporating cosmic alignment into their wedding ceremony and are willing to follow exactly what the astrologer tells them, as they believe in ancient values, beliefs and teachings.

However, he says the limited availability of suitable dates presents a challenge. “To address this, couples are increasingly opting for ‘destination weddings’ where date availability is often more flexible. This proactive approach allows them to secure a date that aligns with both their astrological preferences and practical logistics.”
