Yes, it’s true: Strawberry leaves are just as nutritious as the fruit

While the bright red, juicy strawberries often take center stage on our plates, we may be missing out on a nutritional treasure trove by discarding their leafy greens.

In a post shared on Instagram, content creator and healthcare professional Dr Karan Rajan says, “If you are eating strawberries, eat the leaves as well. A strawberry top with the leaves is known as a calyx and has a nutritional value on par with the berry itself.”

The leaves are packed with polyphenols which are antioxidants, he states, and they contain almost as much vitamin C as the berry. Additionally, they are loaded with other nutrients that are beneficial for our body.

Consultant dietician and certified diabetes educator Kanikka Malhotra says, “Consuming strawberry leaves alongside the fruit offers a double dose of goodness!”

Here’s what they bring to the table:

Vitamin and Mineral Boost: Strawberry leaves are a great source of vitamin C, essential for immune function, and may also contain vitamins A, K, and minerals like iron and calcium.

Antioxidant Powerhouse: They’re rich in antioxidants like flavonoids, which help combat free radicals and may reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Potential Blood Sugar Regulation: Early studies suggest strawberry leaves might help manage blood sugar levels.

Digestive Aid: The leaves offer some dietary fiber, which can promote gut health and regularity.

Antioxidant properties of strawberry leaves compare to other common leafy greens

Strawberry leaves are strong contenders when it comes to antioxidants, according to Malhotra. “While common leafy greens like kale and spinach are excellent sources, studies suggest strawberry leaves might have even higher levels of certain antioxidants, particularly ellagic acid.”

Specific varieties of strawberries whose leaves are particularly recommended for consumption

Most strawberry varieties have edible leaves, but there’s no single ‘best’ type for consumption. Focus on organic, fresh strawberries for the leaves to minimise pesticide exposure, recommends Malhotra.

How strawberry leaves can enhance culinary experiences

Strawberry leaves have a distinct flavor profile compared to the fruit. Malhotra adds, “They tend to be slightly grassy with a subtle sweetness and a hint of astringency. Texture-wise, they’re thinner and more delicate than spinach.”

Here’s how they can enhance your culinary experience, as suggested by Malhotra:

Fresh Addition to Salads: Finely chopped leaves add a unique flavour and vibrant colour to salads.

Infused Teas and Drinks: Steeped leaves create a refreshing and potentially health-boosting herbal tea.

Flavourful Garnishes: Whole or chopped leaves add a decorative touch and subtle strawberry essence to desserts or savoury dishes.

Blended into Smoothies: A handful of leaves can add a subtle grassy note and extra nutrients to your smoothie

Remember, while strawberry leaves are generally safe, consult a qualified healthcare professional if you have any allergies, especially to strawberries or other rosaceae fruits, asserts Malhotra.
