Bigg Boss OTT 3: What happens to the body when you only survive on fruits and water for 24 hours like the contestants?

Bigg Boss OTT 3 has taken a spicy turn, but not in the culinary sense. Since the show’s launch, food has become a major source of conflict among the contestants as the housemates managed to deplete their weekly food supply in just two days!

The past three days have been a battleground of conflicting dietary needs and portion control. With tensions rising, the contestants were forced to survive on a meagre diet of fruits and boiled water for nearly a day. This scarcity not only led to arguments amongst themselves but also prompted actress Sana Makbul to threaten legal action against the show’s producers.

According to Kanika Narang, Deputy Manager, Dietitics Department, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, drinking only boiled water and eating fruits for over 24 hours can lead to nutrient deficiencies and dehydration.

“Fruits are deficient in essential nutrients like protein, healthy fats, and vital minerals, causing an imbalance in the body’s electrolyte levels. Boiled water lacks essential minerals, and prolonged consumption can lead to mineral deficiency. This combination can cause dizziness, headaches, fatigue, and muscle cramps. The body may also experience a rapid drop in blood sugar levels, leading to hypoglycemia. If continued, this diet may cause malnutrition, weakening the immune system and increasing the risk of infections,” she explained in an interaction.

Can it have any long-term effects?

This diet can significantly impact both physical and mental health. Physically, it can lead to weight loss, hair loss, and skin problems. Prolonged malnutrition can cause organ damage, anemia, and decreased bone density, Narang said.

Mentally, the lack of essential nutrients can lead to anxiety, depression, and irritability. The body’s inability to function properly can also cause cognitive impairment, memory loss, and decreased concentration.

If continued, Narang added that this diet can lead to long-term effects like stunted growth, weakened immunity, and increased risk of chronic diseases like osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.

How long can a human body survive well without proper nutrition?

The human body can survive without proper nutrition for several weeks, depending on factors like body fat reserves, overall health, and physical activity. In the absence of food, the body uses stored fat for energy, and the liver converts stored glycogen into glucose for energy, Narang said.

However, she added that without essential nutrients, the body’s functions will deteriorate rapidly. In the short term (1-2 weeks), the body may experience weight loss, fatigue, and dizziness. In the long term (2-6 weeks), the body may experience organ damage, hair loss, and decreased immune function. Prolonged starvation (beyond 6 weeks) can lead to severe malnutrition, organ failure, and even death.
