Are magnesium flake baths an effective way to reduce stress?

When stressed, the body undergoes a series of physiological changes, one of which is the depletion of magnesium levels, neuroscientist and former psychiatric doctor Dr Tara Swart said. According to Dr Swart, magnesium is a crucial mineral involved in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body, including those that regulate stress response. “Therefore, during times of stress, your body’s demand for magnesium increases which can manifest with twitchy eyelids or spasms,” she explained in a podcast with Mel Robbins, a best-selling author, life coach, host, and CNN commentator.

As such, bathing in magnesium flakes is beneficial for replenishing magnesium levels and managing stress, he added. “When you soak in a bath infused with magnesium flakes, your skin absorbs the mineral directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system. This method ensures efficient absorption and utilisation of magnesium, especially when compared to oral supplements, which may not be as readily absorbed by the body,” said Dr Swart.

What are magnesium flakes and how are they beneficial?

Dr Saroj Kumar Yadav, consultant, internal medicine, Aakash Healthcare said that magnesium flakes are a “highly effective and natural way to combat stress and enhance overall well-being”. “Regular use of magnesium flakes can be a transformative addition to your wellness regimen, helping you to feel more relaxed, sleep better, and ultimately lead a healthier life. Adequate magnesium levels can significantly reduce stress and improve sleep, making it easier to handle daily challenges,” said Dr Yadav.

Magnesium flakes are derived from magnesium chloride, a highly absorbable form of the mineral. “These flakes are sourced from the ancient Zechstein Sea, ensuring their purity and efficacy. When dissolved in water, they create a magnesium-rich solution that can be easily absorbed through the skin,” described Dr Yadav.

Magnesium is known as nature’s relaxant. “It plays a crucial role in regulating the body’s stress response by supporting the production of neurotransmitters that promote relaxation and calmness. Additionally, magnesium helps to balance melatonin levels, the hormone responsible for sleep, thereby improving sleep quality,” noted Dr Yadav.

It also aids in the removal of lactic acid from muscles, promoting quicker recovery after exercise and reducing muscle soreness, added Dr Yadav.

According to Dr Yadav, using magnesium flakes is simple and convenient. “For a full-body soak, dissolve 1 cup of flakes in a warm bath and soak for 20-30 minutes. For a more localised treatment, such as a foot soak, dissolve half a cup in a basin of warm water and soak your feet for 15-20 minutes. This method allows magnesium to be quickly absorbed through the soles of the feet, providing a concentrated dose of the mineral,” said Dr Yadav.

What to keep in mind?

While magnesium flakes are generally safe for most people, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. “Individuals with kidney problems or severe heart conditions should consult a healthcare provider before using magnesium flakes,” said Dr Yadav.

Also, people with chronic sleep issues, or mental health issues need to seek timely medical treatment and should not resort to magnesium as a one-point solution.
