You must have heard about the benefits of applying curd to hair to make it lustrous and shiny. But have you ever heard of applying a mix of curd, cinnamon powder and pepper powder If aroma therapist Dr Manoj Das is to go by, the aforementioned pack can help with hair growth.

In an Instagram post, he suggested whisking 4 spoons of fresh curd with a spoonful of cinnamon powder and keeping it aside for four hours. “When applying on hair, add 1 spoon of pepper powder. Keep the pack for 45 minutes and then wash it off with a mild shampoo. The enzymes stimulate hair growth. Use this hair pack once a week. You will start seeing results in a matter of 3-4 weeks,” said Dr Das.

As such, we decided to ask whether this claim is true.

Dr Shareefa Chause, dermatologist and cosmetologist, Shareefa’s Skin Care Clinic said that curd is known to work wonders on hair as it helps improve dry and frizzy hair. “Curd is thought of as an option to treat various hair-related issues like hair fall, itching of the scalp, dandruff, and rough and frizzy hair. Some believe that the anti-inflammatory properties found in curd can significantly help reduce dandruff. Similarly, cinnamon and black pepper powder are also used by people on their hair,” said Dr Chause.

However, according to Dr Chause, it is not a good idea to opt for a DIY method without understanding the side effects. “This hack can damage your hair and scalp skin. Black pepper can cause irritation and rashes to the scalp if applied in excess or directly. People with certain allergies or sensitive skin should avoid using cinnamon powder on their scalp and hair as it can lead to redness and a burning sensation,” said Dr Chause.

It’s best to steer clear of cinnamon because it’s unpredictable and can cause irritation, stressed Dr Meghna Mour, aesthetic dermatologist, trichologist and cosmetologist, founder, Skuccii Supercliniq.

Hence, people are advised to consult a doctor or experts before trying anything new for their hair to avoid any further complications. Be extremely careful while using these ingredients on the scalp, cautioned Dr Chause. “In dermatology, we always go for treatments that are safe and effective, and cinnamon and black pepper don’t fit the bill. When it comes to growing your hair, stick to ingredients and treatments that are proven to work and won’t give you any bad reactions,” added Mour.
