Saltwater bath may help reduce back pain — but you need to use this specific variety

We all have read about the benefits of having saltwater for hydration but have you ever heard about saltwater baths for releasing tension from the back and reducing stress levels? Yes, you are welcome.

Dr Akhilesh Yadav, associate director, orthopaedics and joint replacement, Max Hospital, Vaishali shared that those with back pain may benefit from taking a saltwater bath, especially if Epsom salt is used.

“When dissolved in warm bath water, Epsom salts — made of magnesium sulphate — can help the body absorb magnesium better. This can help ease pain by reducing inflammation and relaxing muscles. The warmth of the bath can also ease tension and muscle pain. Healing may also be aided by the heat-induced blood circulation which rejuvenates the body,” said Dr Yadav.

Agreeing, Dr Sunil Dachepalli, senior consultant orthopaedic, robotic joint replacement and arthroscopic surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad added that Epsom salt is a primary ingredient in a lot of commercial bath salts, which can be used in lukewarm water. “It is absorbed through the skin, which reduces muscle soreness and thereby increases muscle function,” said Dr Dachepalli.

Warm water relaxes muscles which, in turn, decreases tension, and relieves spasm that causes back pain, said Dr Dachepalli. Buoyancy is another factor. “Being in water reduces gravitational pull which helps relieve pressure on the spine and joints,” he continued.

How to take a saltwater bath?

To treat back pain with an Epsom salt bath, fill a bathtub with warm water, add two cups of Epsom salt, and soak it for 15-20 minutes, making sure the water is around your back when you sit in it.

What to consider?

While you may experience temporary pain relief, “there is minimal scientific proof to support the popular belief that taking a salt bath aids in the body’s detoxification“, stressed Dr Yadav.

Before beginning any new treatment, it is always advisable to speak with a professional or your doctor, particularly if there are any underlying medical issues, added Dr Yadav.
