You must try this moringa thovayal; here’s why

Chutneys are the best way to elevate a meal. After all, condiments not only tantalise the tastebuds but also add a touch of nutrition to the plate. As such, when Shalini Santhosh Kumar shared the recipe for moringa thovayal or thogayal, we wanted to understand more about its benefits.

“Morninga thovayal is a must-try. You can have it with hot rice, paratha, dosa, idli. It’s a quick recipe that you can prepare in 15 minutes,” shared Kumar on Instagram.

Ingredients

1 cup – Drumstick leaves
2 sprigs – Curry leaf
1 tbsp – Chana dal
1 tbsp – Urad dal
1 – Red chilli
2-3 – Garlic cloves
5-6 – Shallots
4 tbsp – Grated coconut
A small piece of tamarind
2 cups – Rice
Salt as per taste
2tsp – Wood-pressed groundnut oil

Method

*Make sure to clean the moringa leaves well
*Add groundnut oil to an iron kadai and start adding urad dal, chana dal, red chilli, and curry leaves. Let it splutter.
*Now add garlic, shallots, and grated coconut to it and sauté until golden brown.
*Finally add tamarind and salt to it.
*Once it is cooled down, grind it in traditional mortar. “It gives extra flavour,” shared Kumar.
*Serve it with hot rice and ghee.

Why you should add moringa to your daily diet

Drumstick or moringa leaves are beneficial because of their antioxidant properties, said dietitian Simrat Bhui. “Moringa leaves have extraordinary culinary values,” she added.

Moringa leaves are abundant in calcium therefore they can substitute many calcium supplements. Due to its high calcium content, it is also beneficial in rheumatoid arthritis, mentioned Bhui.

Dr Archana Batra, a dietician, and a certified diabetes educator said that in the realm of nutrition and wellness, few foods stand out as much as moringa. “Known as the “miracle tree,” moringa is a powerhouse of essential nutrients, offering myriad health benefits. One of the most delightful ways to incorporate this superfood into your diet is through moringa thogayal, a traditional South Indian chutney that is both flavorful and nutritious,” said Dr Batra.

Moringa leaves are incredibly rich in vitamins and minerals. :They contain seven times more vitamin C than oranges, four times more calcium than milk, and three times more potassium than bananas. Additionally, moringa is packed with iron, vitamin A, and essential amino acids. When made into thogayal, these nutrients are preserved, providing a substantial boost to your daily nutrient intake,” shared Dr Batra.

According to Bhui, moringa leaves when mixed with water becomes a “great detoxifying water”. “It cleanses the liver as well as is used in the treatment of upset stomach. It also prevents cardiovascular ailment by managing high blood pressure. Its anti-inflammatory properties contribute to good heart health,” said Bhui.

Their high vitamin A content promotes good vision, while vitamin C aids in collagen synthesis for skin health. “Drumstick leaves also contain iron and vitamin B-complex, crucial for combating anemia and boosting energy levels,” said Payal Sharma, senior dietician, Dharamshila Narayana Suprspeciality Hospital.
