The kitchen houses many herbs and condiments that have the potential to help you lose weight, and improve digestion, metabolism, energy, and also your sleep quality. Some of these include carom seeds, fennel seeds, cardamom, clove, ginger, pepper, star anise, cinnamon, bay leaf, mint, sweet basil, lemon, and others. It’s not just us, even chef Meghna Kamdar believes so; she, in fact, even shared that a “magical powder made by roasting cumin seeds, carom seeds, and fennel seeds – all in equal quantity – can work wonders for your digestion and overall health“.

She suggested having ½ tsp of this powder before each meal, three times a day, with a few drops of lemon in a glass of water to overcome bloating, indigestion, weight gain, sleeplessness, and boost your energy levels. “Give it a try and experience the amazing benefits for yourself. You can easily store this powder in a cabinet in an air-tight bottle for 2-3 months,” shared Kamdar.

Commenting on the same, Ayurvedic practitioner Dr Dimple Jangda said that cumin seeds help boost metabolism, burn calories, and contribute to weight loss. “It is also carminative and helps improve digestion and release bloating. When your digestion is healthy, it allows better absorption of nutrients, and more energy and even improves your sleep quality. The seeds have a calming effect on the body, helping reduce stress and anxiety, which are common sleep disruptors,” said Dr Jangda.

Carom seeds are a healthy source of calcium, iron, fibre which contributes to overall health and vitality. “They also have antioxidants that help fight free radicals, and fatigue and improve overall energy levels. They help in absorbing nutrients and prevent fat accumulation near the belly. They also help suppress appetite and reduce cravings for unhealthy food. They are also used for deworming and cleansing the gut of unhealthy bacteria and parasites,” mentioned Dr Jangda.

Fennel seeds have similar health benefits. According to Dr Jangda, these are low in calories and high in fibre, which helps control hunger and prevent overeating. “Fennel seeds have diuretic properties which help reduce water retention, bloating, and thus weight issues. It can improve metabolism, allowing faster calorie burn and weight loss,” shared Dr Jangda.

Fennel seeds are also rich in vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, potassium, and magnesium, providing more energy to the body. They are carminative and promote digestion, efficient conversion of food into energy, and even improve sleep quality by reducing digestive health issues. “Fennel seeds are also a rich source of antioxidants that help reduce oxidative stress, which can otherwise drain energy levels. They have a calming effect that can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. It’s an excellent spice for women to reduce incidences of UTI, and balance hormonal health, which can otherwise affect melatonin and sleep quality,” said Dr Jangda.

Lemons have several health benefits like weight loss, improved metabolism, better energy levels, and good sleep as they are a rich source of vitamin C. “They are low in calories, and a rich source of citric acid which helps boost metabolism and burn calories. Lemon water also creates a feeling of fullness which helps control appetite and thus reduce excess eating. They also help in detoxifying the body, and cleansing the digestive system of undigested foods, toxins, and unhealthy bacteria, thus improving weight loss,” shared Dr Jangda.

Improved digestion from consuming lemons also helps reduce discomfort at night, thus allowing a deeper restful sleep.

Shradha Singh, Regency Hospital Ltd, Kanpur shared that while incorporating a mixture of 1/2 teaspoon of carom, cumin, and fennel seeds powder with lemon juice and water before every meal may have some potential benefits, it’s essential to understand that weight loss and overall health are influenced by a combination of factors, including diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management.

“It’s important to note that while these seeds may offer some benefits for weight loss and overall health, they are not a magic solution. Sustainable weight loss requires a comprehensive approach that includes a balanced diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and stress management,” said Singh.

Incorporating these seeds into your diet may complement these efforts, but “they should not be relied upon as the sole strategy for weight loss or overcoming sleeplessness”. “Always consult with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your diet or lifestyle,” urged Singh.
