Who does not like skincare remedies that promise long-lasting effects? But, it is extremely important to note that not everything may suit your skin type or address your concern effectively. So, when Bigg Boss 14 fame Jasmin Bhasin shared her favourite skincare hacks, we wanted to learn more about their effectiveness for all skin types.

The actor suggested making a DIY scrub mask of masoor dal with either curd or water (depending on availability) and applying it on the face.

“I love going to the beach destinations. So, something that I learnt in college — grind masoor dal and make its powder. Carry it anywhere you go: you will not need a facial, and you will not get tanned. You have to mix the powdered dal in water or curd and apply it. When it dries, scrub, and wash it off,” Bhasin told Hauterrfly.

Is it effective?

“Though masoor dal is considered a natural exfoliator that removes dirt and impurities from the skin, there is no scientific evidence to back up the effectiveness of this hack. Leaving this mixture for an extended period can cause harmful side effects on the skin like skin irritation, clogged pores, inflammation, and even allergic reactions in some cases,” said Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics.

During the conversation, she also shared her go-to DIY scrub for reducing dark circles. “Mix coffee with sugar and apply it under the eyes for better results,” said Bhasin.

Explaining why she swears by this hack, Bhasin said, “I have a bad problem of under eyes. My eyes look sleepy and I need concealer. Put the mix under the eyes and scrub it. The dark circles go away and you look fresh,” said Bhasin, adding that these are two of her “favourite skincare hacks”.

Is it effective?

Coffee is widely used as the main ingredient in various skincare products due to its rewarding properties, but applying coffee and sugar directly on the face can lead to under-eye dryness, skin irritation, breakout and even micro-tear in some cases, cautioined Dr Kapoor. “Individuals are advised to fact-check all the new hacks they see on the internet before directly experimenting with them on their skin,” said Dr Kapoor.
