Believe it or not, but Dahaad actor Gulshan Devaiah has eaten only one meal a day (OMAD) since 2018. Opening up about this habit, he said, “I like this way of eating. The positives are that you can eat what you want. You don’t have to necessarily be on a diet because your portions are getting controlled. The drawbacks are that sometimes if you don’t eat a variety of foods, you don’t get enough nutrition. So, you may have some vitamin deficiencies, and I do. My B12 and D3 are something that gets a bit low. So, I have to supplement those through prescription-based medicines. I have been doing this since 2018,” Devaiah said.

He added that even when he goes to his native place in Bengaluru, he sticks to his meal pattern. “Mostly. I do. Sometimes, I go a little off course,” Devaiah said on Khaane Mein Kya Hai.

So, what happens to the body if you have been eating OMAD for almost six years?

In this diet, people eat only once a day and then go on a strict 23 hours of fasting for effective results. “The rule is simple: you have to eat one meal per day, with one choice of beverage within an hour. This means that individuals have to consume all of their daily calories, essential nutrients, vitamins, and proteins all within a single meal,” said Dr Aklesh Tandekar, head consultant critical care, Wockhardt Hospitals,  Mira Road.

OMAD has a range of health benefits such as “aiding in weight loss, creating discipline, helping burn fat, boosting gut health, and leading to better digestion when followed for a long time or over years”. “However, eating OMAD can hamper your health causing various problems such as high blood pressure, increase in fasting blood pressure sugar, low energy, nausea, and dizziness,” cautioned Dr Tandekar.

“Individuals are advised to consult experts before trying new types of diets or experiments on their bodies to avoid health complications,” added Dr Tandekar.

A consulting dietitian can help curate a customised diet plan that considers various factors such as age, medical history, and metabolism rate.
