We find out if this spice mix is the ultimate fat-burning drink

Unless you are on a social media detox, we are pretty sure you have seen at least one video proclaiming a concoction to be the “ultimate fat-burning drink“. While the idea of such a wonder drink is appealing, do they work? We decided to find out the same after coming across a weight loss drink (a mix of turmeric, cinnamon, black pepper, and ginger)  shared by fitness trainer Nitesh Soni.

Let’s understand the ingredients:

“The curcumin present in turmeric may help regulate metabolism, while the cinnamon can help keep blood sugar stable. Further, the piperine found in black pepper can help curcumin absorb better, and ginger’s thermogenic characteristics may modestly increase metabolism,” said Kanikka Malhotra, consultant dietician and diabetes educator.

However, it is critical to not oversimplify weight loss. “There is no single ‘fat-burning drink’ that can help shed pounds on its own. A nutritious diet, frequent exercise, and plenty of sleep are all necessary for long-term weight loss,” said Malhotra.

Pros

Hydration: This drink promotes water consumption, which is essential for weight management.
Antioxidant powerhouse: The contents are high in antioxidants, which can improve general health.
Metabolism boost: Ginger and certain components of turmeric may provide a small metabolic boost.

Cons

Oversimplification: This drink is unlikely to be a magic bullet for weight loss.
Individual needs: Everyone’s body reacts differently. What works for one person may not work for another.
Underlying medical conditions: Certain components may interact with drugs or exacerbate health issues. For example, turmeric can thin the blood, while ginger might irritate the stomach in certain people.

While fitness professionals are great for exercise guidance, a qualified clinical dietitian is an expert in food and nutrition, said Malhotra. “This drink may be a tasty addition to your day, but remember that it is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. Consult a qualified dietician for a specific weight management plan that will fuel your body and set you up for long-term success. So, let go of the ‘quick fix’ mentality and embrace a comprehensive approach to healthy living,” suggested Malhotra.

Dietitians create plans tailored to your health goals, preferences, and any underlying conditions.

Balance nutrients: They ensure you get all the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs for optimal health.

Develop sustainable habits: Dietitians help you develop healthy eating habits that you can maintain long-term, not just quick fixes, said Malhotra.
