Many people love to chew betel leaf or paan after a meal owing to its digestive properties and refreshing taste. Little did we know that this after-meal treat can also aid weight loss. Yes, we were as surprised to learn this on Instagram.

Turns out, having betel leaf with a few fennel seeds, black peppercorns, and two black raisins after lunch can help you shed those extra kilos. The social media post added that the combination, when taken every day post lunch, can aid digestion, curb a sweet tooth, and also help with weight loss.

So, we rushed to an expert to understand the science behind this remedy. Here’s what we found out.

Betel leaf is renowned for its medicinal properties and potential health benefits, such as aiding digestion and boosting metabolism, which might indirectly support weight loss goals, said Dr Sangeeta Tiwari, clinical nutritionist, Artemis Lite, NFC, New Delhi. “Fennel seeds — that possess diuretic properties — are known for their ability to suppress appetite and enhance metabolism. On the other hand, black pepper’s active compound, piperine, can improve metabolic performance and aid in fat loss. Additionally, dried black raisins, which are high in fibre, can promote satiety, although they are also rich in natural sugars and calories,” said Dr Tiwari.

According to her, these ingredients can contribute to weight loss by improving digestion, boosting metabolism, reducing water retention, and promoting satiety.

However, Dr Tiwari was quick to add that weight loss is a complex process that requires a holistic approach, and “relying solely on paan with these ingredients is not a substitute for a balanced diet and regular exercise regimen.”

So, what should be kept in mind?

It’s crucial to understand there is no one-size-fits-all solution for weight management. “To achieve sustainable weight loss, a comprehensive approach encompassing a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and lifestyle modifications is crucial,” said Dr Tiwari.

She continued that incorporating paan with these ingredients into one’s diet should be done judiciously, as excessive consumption may inadvertently introduce unwanted calories, especially from the raisins.

“While the combination of betel leaf, saunf, pepper, and black raisins may offer certain benefits that support weight loss efforts, it is essential to integrate them as part of a broader weight management strategy,” said Dr Tiwari.

In a nutshell, while this traditional mixture may play a supportive role in weight loss due to its digestive and metabolic benefits, it should be consumed in moderation and within the context of an overall healthy lifestyle.
