‘I go to my nutritionist every 6 months to change my diet’: Tusshar Kapoor

Post At: May 22/2024 08:10PM

Tusshar Kapoor agrees that “age is not on his side”. As such, the 47-year-old watches what he eats, and changes his diet every six months. “Now, I pretty much understand what my body needs,” he says, adding that he also keeps tweaking his workouts to shed those “few extra calories”.

But the one thing he is extremely content about is having Laksshay, his son, by his side. The Golmaal actor, who opted for surrogacy, reveals how his eight-year-old boy changed him. “He has changed my life completely. Becoming a father was like a beginning after the end. He was like a new beginning, a rebirth for me; the most fulfilling experience thus far. He is doing well, and he is going to enjoy this life. He is someone I look forward to every day at home. He has motivated me like no one else,” said Kapoor in an exclusive interaction with indianexpress.com.

The actor, currently busy shooting for his sister and producer Ekta Kapoor’s series titled Dus June Ki Raat, opened up about his life, workout, diet, and learning from father and actor Jeetendra.

Edited excerpts below:

Q- Tell us about your fitness routine.

Tusshar Kapoor – I work out only three-four days a week. I leave it to the trainer to decide what I should do. I do different body parts on different days. I do strength training and a conditioning workout at the end of every session so that cardio is taken care of. When I work out at home, on the fourth day, I just do cardio. Sometimes, you have those few extra calories that need to go.

Q – How do you ensure your diet is wholesome? Are there any specific foods you almost always have?

TK – I have a nutritionist who guides me. I go to her every six months to change my diet. Now, I pretty much understand what my body needs.

My food is more protein-centric but I do have carbs for lunch. So, I have some healthy varieties of rice. I have a snack in the evening and a lot of water throughout the day. However, I have had to control the quantities in the last few years because age is not on my side. So, we have to shift and change our patterns every decade.

Q – Coming from there, are you also under pressure to look a certain age?

TK –I have to admit that at times I’ve been pressured by the demands of looking after myself, my body, my family, and attending unconventional events wherein I’m not facing the camera as a character but myself. I think the idea is to be focused, to believe everything will fall into place and everything will happen. It is overwhelming, of course.

Q – What brought you to the P&G #WeSeeEqual Summit?

TK –It was about spreading the culture of inclusivity within the organisation, and reassuring stakeholders that employees from different walks of life, family backgrounds, and orientations are accepted as they are. This hit the right chords on a personal and professional level. I wanted to be part of the conversation, and have a chance to share my own experiences.

Q – How are you maintaining your skincare routine?

TK –I never really cared earlier, but now, I am a little more concerned. I do the regular roll – moisturisers, sunblock, night cream and face wash. I have a few dos and don’ts before I put on makeup and before I go to sleep. It needs to be done because I face the camera.

Q – You have been vocal about your surrogacy, has anything changed in the last few years when it comes to being a single parent?

TK – That we are even having conversations about this shows we pushed the envelope. We have made people change the way they think; about what it means to start a family, and people are now accepting unconventional members in their family structures. Still a long way to go but I think Indians are on the fast track to being as evolved as the human race can get.

Q – How do you describe your parenting style especially when it comes to being digitally wired in?

TK –Laksshay is an intelligent, insightful, bright child. That is why I want to set limits on his screen time; he is only allowed some time every day. I don’t want him to be addicted to the screens. The real world is where you learn and grow. That’s how I want him to be. I am not too much into the digital space either and try to control my screen time as much as possible.

Q – How has your equation with sister Ekta Kapoor changed over the years?

TK –We used to fight a lot as children. But now, we are like good friends. We understand each other, pray for each other. Our kids are always together. I guess that’s how we are as a family.

Q – Your father, the legend Jeetendra, recently celebrated his 82nd birthday. Tell us what are the qualities you want Laksshya to inherit from his grandfather.

TK – My dad is very patient. He hails from the old-school of thought and is a little bit on the black-and-white side. At the same time, he is liberal and accepted my sister and I, and the kind of families we started, open-mindedly and with open arms. So, I feel Laksshay should inherit his grandfather’s way of thinking which is both traditional and has the best of the modern world. I think that is what India stands for – a traditionally conservative way of thinking with a liberal mindset which is accepting and inclusive.

Q – Inclusivity brings us to ask what you think of the upcoming Pride Month 2024.

TK –While realities may be different for the LGBTQ+ community, I think today, we are at the brink of a revolution. The good thing is that the laws have changed for them too. But, the community has a voice. India is going to herald a new world. We have changed laws and broken norms and the glass ceiling, despite being considered traditional. We are on the right track and I think they are well taken care of. But yes, miles to go before anyone can sleep.
