Has doomscrolling become a part of your nightly routine? Can’t fall asleep without tossing and turning in bed for hours?

Good sleep is crucial for good health. While relaxation and rejuvenation are key, the din and noise of our fast-paced lives have made it difficult to get our beauty rest.

As per a 2024 study published in the International Journal For Multidisciplinary Research, “Vastu Shastra facilitates a harmonious relationship between human beings and the environment, which leads to sustainable development. Vastu also refers to the art and science of arranging objects to improve the flow of positive energy and prevent negative energy.”

We spoke to Vastu Acharya Manoj Shrivastava, who shared the dos and don’ts to ensure sound sleep.

What should we avoid keeping near the bed while sleeping?

Shrivastava said Vastu suggests avoiding keeping sharp objects like knives and scissors near the bed, and mirrors reflecting the bed, stack of books, and plants.

“Some people use box beds and on top of it store their footwear in them. These should be avoided. In the modern world, one should avoid keeping electronic gadgets in general and more specifically wi-fi routers and mobile phones just next to your bed,” he adds.

Why should we avoid these?

Explaining how all these objects disturb sleep and create a feeling of overwhelm, Shrivastava said, “Mobile phones, wi-fi routers, and televisions emit strong electromagnetic waves that can interfere with sleep. Mirrors that reflect the bed attract stress and relationship issues as they reflect the energy back to the person sleeping. Sharp objects create a feeling of danger in the subconscious mind thereby disturbing sleep.”

Large plants or too many plants can sometimes drain the energy from the person while they sleep, said the Vastu expert.

What can be kept instead?

Shrivastava recommended keeping a peaceful artwork on the wall behind the headboard of the bed. Rose quartz crystals and fresh flowers are also recommended. Symbols signifying love and calmness like mandarin ducks, a pair of swans, or love birds can also be kept for good energy.

For sound sleep, Shrivastava suggested sleeping with one’s head pointing towards the South. In case of troubled sleep, placing a red pouch filled with fennel seeds below their pillow would help.
