The world of films has always fascinated Manish Malhotra, who began his career as a costume designer in 1990. However, the fashion designer, who started his eponymous label in 2006, has not limited himself to it and has also experimented with interior designing. “The ride continues and is as exhilarating. I am truly grateful to be able to do what I love,” Malhotra, 57, said.

Taking these experiments a step ahead, he recently collaborated with Gauri Khan for Bonito Designs, and has been offering his design expertise in the décor space with their latest project World Designs. “Designing homes is a passion close to my heart, and this collaboration aligns perfectly with my desire to create beautiful living spaces. Our latest project is particularly exciting as it allows us to incorporate various global influences and personal visions into our creative process,” said Malhotra, adding that he is “enthusiastic” about the chance to transform and enhance the world of design.

In an interview with indianexpress.com, Malhotra shares his design philosophy and his message for young guns looking to make a mark in the field.

Excerpts:

Q- What is your design philosophy? Also, since design is all about personal choice, what are your likes and dislikes when it comes to your home?

Manish Malhotra – In my home space, I gravitate towards a blend of classic elegance and contemporary flair. I love incorporating luxurious fabrics like silk and velvet, along with rich textures and intricate detailing. Neutral tones serve as a canvas, allowing statement pieces and pops of colour to shine. However, clutter is a definite dislike for me. I prefer clean lines and minimalistic decor, ensuring each element contributes to the overall harmony and tranquility of the space.

Q- Is there a tip you would like all design students to swear by?

Manish Malhotra – My advice to all design students would be to stay true to themselves and their vision. In a world filled with trends and expectations, it’s essential to carve out your unique style and perspective. Embrace your individuality, push boundaries, and never compromise your creativity for conformity. Remember, the most compelling designs emerge from genuine passion and expression.

Today, there’s a shift towards personalised and functional spaces, reflecting individual lifestyles and needs. Technology plays a pivotal role, in offering smart solutions for convenience and efficiency. Sustainability is another significant trend focusing on eco-friendly materials and practices. Moreover, there’s a newfound appreciation for diverse cultural influences, fostering creativity and enriching design narratives. Overall, the industry is vibrant, dynamic, and ever-evolving.

Q – Important conversations that we need to have in the design space and why

Manish Malhotra – In the design space, crucial conversations revolve around sustainability, inclusivity, and cultural appreciation. Sustainability is imperative for ethical production and environmental preservation. Inclusivity ensures that diverse voices and perspectives are represented, fostering creativity and empathy. Cultural appreciation acknowledges the richness of heritage and promotes cross-cultural understanding. Engaging in these dialogues is essential for creating meaningful, responsible designs that resonate with people from all walks of life, shaping a more harmonious and equitable future.

Q – Top 4 must-have design elements

Manish Malhotra – The top four design elements that I consider indispensable are texture, colour, lighting, and balance. Texture adds depth and dimension, invoking visual interest. Colour sets the mood and ambiance, evoking emotions and enhancing spaces. Lighting creates an atmosphere and highlights focal points, shaping the overall aesthetic. Balance ensures harmony, orchestrating elements within a space for a visually pleasing result. Together, these elements form the foundation of compelling and enduring design.

Q- Top 3 lessons for design students

Manish Malhotra – For aspiring designers, I emphasise three key lessons: first, cultivate a deep understanding of your audience and their needs to create impactful designs. Second, embrace failure as a stepping stone to growth, learning from setbacks to refine your craft. Finally, stay true to your unique vision and style, as authenticity is the cornerstone of memorable and meaningful design. By embodying these principles, you’ll navigate the creative journey with confidence and purpose.
