Kabir Khan reveals Kartik Aaryan lost 32 per cent body fat with ‘no steroids’ for Chandu Champion

Karik Aaryan‘s transformation for Chandu Champion, in which he essays the role of India’s first Paralympic gold medalist Murlikant Petka, took more than a year. But he remained committed and continued to work hard on his body, shared filmmaker Kabir Khan, adding that he was “proud” of Kartik’s “inspiring” transformation — without using steroids of any kind.

“Chandu Nahi… Champion Hai Mai… The story of Chandu Champion is an incredibly inspiring true story but the journey that Kartik went through to become this champion is no less inspiring. I met him when he had put on weight for a role. He had 39 per cent body fat. I told him that he had to portray an international level multi-disciplinary sportsperson. He just smiled and said ‘I will do it Sir’. A year and a half later with no use of steroids – something that he was adamant about – we took this photo on set. Body fat 7 per cent! I’m proud of you @kartikaaryan”, he wrote. (sic)

But, what is body fat?

There are two different types of fats in the body. One is subcutaneous fat tissue that is easily seen and the other is visceral fat which is deeply located inside the body and also present around the internal organs of the body. “It is the visceral fat that has detrimental effects on the health,” Bala Krishna Reddy Dabbedi, fitness expert and co-founder, and director at Fittr, told us in an earlier interaction.

A high body fat percentage may put one at a higher risk of lifestyle diseases. A body fat percentage of 15 or lower is recommended for males, while a body fat percentage of 25 or lower is recommended for females, according to Dabbedi.

Tips to sustainably lose body fat

Along with tailored exercise, diet plays an important role, especially when no steroids are taken, said fitness expert Garima Goyal. “The aim is to control the visceral fat, which accumulates around organs in the abdominal cavity, and is associated with an increased risk of various health conditions, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome,” said Goyal.
