Now whether you’re experiencing a power cut, or trying to save money (and the environment); there are ways to find some cool escape — even without air conditioning.

Air conditioning may seem like a distant dream. But fear not, fellow heat warriors! This isn’t a surrender call, it’s a battle cry. With a little know-how and some strategic manoeuvring, you can emerge victorious from this heatwave.

Limit alcohol  and caffeine consumption

According to Dr Divya Gopal, Consultant, Internal Medicine, Sir H N Reliance Foundation Hospital, alcohol can dehydrate you and make you feel hotter. You should avoid sugary drinks and excessive caffeine, which can dehydrate you further.

Use khus curtains

Indian heatwave researcher Gulrez Shah Azhar wrote in NPR that using khus curtains can help curtail the heat. Khus is grass curtains hung over doors and windows and sprayed with water. The curtains convert the dry wind outside into a fragrant, cool, damp breeze as it blows into the house. Khus is also used in coolers.

Nap in the hottest hours of the day

Azhar also suggested napping in the hottest hours of the day, if your work allows for it. “Try not to burn energy or exhaust yourself by going out, exercising or standing outside, because the scorching sunlight and hot air will make you hotter.”

Hydration is key (with water or not)

According to Dr Gopal, you should drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Aim for eight glasses or more, and consider incorporating fruits and vegetables with high water content like watermelon, cucumber, and celery.

Dress strategically

Opt for loose-fitting, lightweight, and breathable clothing made from natural fibers like cotton or linen. Avoid dark colors that absorb heat, and consider a hat to shield your head from the sun.

Block the sun

Dr Gopal said to keep your windows and blinds closed during the hottest part of the day (typically afternoon) to prevent sunlight from heating up your space. Blackout curtains can be particularly effective.

Create cross-ventilation

Open windows on opposite sides of your home to create a natural airflow. Experiment with different combinations to find the most effective airflow for your space.

DIY cooling solutions

Fill a shallow pan with ice and water and place it in front of a fan for a refreshing breeze. Damp cloths hung strategically can also create a cooling effect through evaporation.

Take cool showers

A refreshing shower or bath can lower your body temperature and provide temporary relief.

Seek air-conditioned refuge

If your home becomes unbearably hot, visit a public library, shopping mall, or community center with air conditioning to cool down for a while.

Bonus Tip: Invest in a few strategically placed houseplants. Plants can help cool the air through transpiration, the process by which they release water vapour, advised Dr Gopal.
