With most places experiencing a heatwave, people usually prefer to stay indoors. But, in doing so, we end up consuming a lot of electricity which is reflected in the electricity bills. However, making a few smart decisions and teaks can help you bring down your electricity bills, along with saving electricity and conserving the environment. Digital creator Shashank Alshi took to Instagram to list a few effective, easy tips that all of us can follow.

“You will be surprised how these small changes can reduce your electricity bill,” said Alshi.

*For appliances like TVs and set-up boxes, ensure you switch off the main switch. They consume electricity when they are in standby mode.

*Use an extension board. You can switch off all the appliances all at once. For example, your PC or personal computer or TV or its set-up box.

*Keep your AC temperature between 24-26 degrees Celsius. “With every degree you reduce, your electricity bill rises. Also, try and use a timer as well. The room remains cool and the bill also reduces.

*Switch old filament bulbs with LED bulbs. “A 10-watt filament bulb consumes 1 unit of electricity in 10 hours. But an LED bulb consumes the same amount in 111 hours,” said Alshi. “You can save Rs 700/- per year in your electricity bills by using one CFL of 20 watts,” mentioned the Government of Haryana’s official site.

We also compiled a few tips from the Government of Haryana’s website.

*Dirty tube lights and bulbs reflect less light and can absorb 50 percent of the light; dust your tube lights and lamps regularly.

*Many automatic devices can help in saving energy used in lighting. One should consider employing infrared sensors, motion sensors, automatic timers, dimmers, and solar cells wherever applicable, to switch on/off lighting circuits.

*Refrigerators should be kept away from all sources of heat, including direct sunlight, radiators and appliances such as the oven, and cooking range. “When it’s dark, place a lit flashlight inside the refrigerator and close the door. If light around the door is seen, the seals need to be replaced,” it mentioned.

What can help in the kitchen?

Implementing energy-saving measures in the kitchen can have a significant impact on reducing energy costs and minimising one’s carbon footprint, said Dr Manu Nanda, chief marketing officer, Stove Kraft Ltd.

According to him,

*While buying new kitchen appliances, it’s important to choose wisely to help you save money and energy. One key factor to consider is the power usage of each appliance. “Opting for appliances with low wattage is a great way to ensure efficiency and lower power consumption,” said Nanda.

*Additionally, appliances with BLDC motors (brushless DC motors) instead of regular AC power motors can save up to 50 per cent of power, making them a worthwhile investment, he said. “It’s also worth noting that appliances with low-power but high-torque capabilities can be just as effective as their high-power counterparts while consuming less electricity,” said Nanda.

*For those who are health-conscious and want to save on electricity, “slow juicers are a great option that consume less electricity compared to mixer-grinder, or food processors”, said Nanda.
