Young entrepreneur Navya Naveli Nanda, alongside her mother Shweta Bachchan Nanda and grandmother, the renowned actor Jaya Bachchan, continue to share insights into the workings of the Bachchan household, occasionally divulging some well-kept secrets. In a recent episode of What the Hell Navya’s Season 2, Jaya shared her personal haircare routine, noting that, akin to many Bengalis, she relies on a concoction of coconut oil infused with curry leaves and fenugreek seeds. This mixture is boiled, cooled, and strained before application, serving as a nourishing pre-shampoo treatment. “I use it regularly for my hair,” she disclosed.

Does the mixture of coconut oil, curry leaves, and methi seeds work for your hair?

Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist, and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics said that coconut oil infused with curry leaves and fenugreek seeds as a natural hair oil blend combines the nourishing properties of these ingredients to address various factors that contribute to hair growth.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil is rich in medium-chain fatty acids, particularly lauric acid, which has antimicrobial properties. “It helps keep the scalp healthy by preventing fungal and bacterial infections. Additionally, coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft, reducing protein loss and strengthening the hair from within. The moisturising properties of coconut oil also combat dryness and contribute to a healthy scalp environment,” said Dr Kapoor.

Curry leaves

Curry leaves are a powerhouse of antioxidants and essential nutrients like beta-carotene and proteins. These nutrients nourish the hair follicles, promoting stronger and healthier hair growth. “Curry leaves also contain amino acids that prevent hair thinning and breakage. They stimulate hair follicles, encouraging the growth of new hair strands and preventing premature graying,” said Dr Kapoor.

Fenugreek seeds

Fenugreek seeds are rich in proteins, nicotinic acid, and lecithin, which are known to strengthen hair roots and prevent hair loss. According to Dr Kapoor, they contain hormone precursors that may help rebuild hair follicles and promote hair growth. “Fenugreek seeds also have conditioning properties, providing shine and smoothness to the hair.”

How to use it

*To prepare the hair oil, fenugreek seeds, and curry leaves are infused with coconut oil through a simple boiling and straining process.

“These ingredients are known for their potent aroma and natural goodness. The oil is typically applied to the scalp and hair, massage gently, and left on for a specified period before washing. Regular application, ideally once or twice a week, is recommended for visible results,” said Dr Kapoor.

Dr Kapoor reiterated that the combination of coconut oil, curry leaves, and fenugreek seeds creates a synergistic blend that addresses various aspects of hair health. “From nourishing the scalp and hair follicles to preventing infections and promoting strength and shine, this natural hair oil offers a holistic approach to supporting hair growth. While individual results may vary, many individuals incorporate this traditional remedy into their hair care routine for its potential benefits in achieving luscious, healthy locks,” she concluded.
