A former Google employee, in a series of posts on X (formerly known as Twitter), recently claimed that he was denied promotion for “being a white man.”

Shaun Maguire worked at Google’s Mountain View, the California-based headquarters from 2016 to 2019, according to New York Post. He allegedly made these claims following Google’s Gemini fiasco. “Gemini is the tip of the iceberg,” he said in a post on Friday.

Maguire was prompted by a poll, dated December 16, 2023, on the social media platform to go public with his allegations regarding the Alphabet Inc. company. “Should I go public with the story about the time I was told I can’t be promoted for being a white man?” he asked to which 91 per cent of the voters said “yes.”

Following his poll, Elon Musk who owns the platform, responded: “This is incredibly widespread in recent years.”

Over a month later, he made the revelation on Friday, which has now gone viral on social media. It garnered over 10.3 million views on X.

Describing the company as “an absolute trash can dumpster fire,” he also said that Google was denying the allegations. “But nobody from the company has reached out to me for my side of the story,” he added in the post.

Honestly, pathetic

I don’t want any compensation

I just want you to fix these problems, especially if you’re going to lead in AI https://t.co/0I7bmWmPIu

Maguire said he does not want any compensation. Addressing Google, he said: “I just want you to fix these problems, especially if you’re going to lead in AI.”

Further, he quoted an official from Google and said: “I’m really not supposed to tell you this. It could get me fired. But you’re one of the highest performing people here but I can’t promote you right now because I have a quota. My hands are tied. You’ll get the next slot. Please be patient. I’m really sorry. – Google”

Reacting to the latest series of posts, Musk said: “I’ve heard this many times”. Maguire, who also said that about five of his ex-Google colleagues had reached out to him following the post with “similar stories and evidence/screenshots, responded to Musk saying, “We have to start telling these stories.”

“FYI this was just my teaser story… not even close to the worst of it,” Maguire added.
