“Russia is an aggressor and it must stop the war with Ukraine.” This was the stand taken by Nepal in the United Nations. However, Nepal has now faced a diplomatic embarrassment as over a hundred Nepali youths were found enrolled in the Russian Army, with a dozen of them confirmed dead.

There is no exact figure on the number of Nepal citizens who joined the Russian army but based on the petitions received from the families of the ‘affected’, the number will be between 130 to 200 , official sources told The Indian Express.

Nepal government is now engaged in diplomatic talks with the Russian government over the compensation to the families of the deceased, and the safe return of those still serving in the Russian army.

Russia, sources said, has agreed to pay the compensation to the families of the deceased through the Nepali Embassy in Moscow, but there has been no word about the return of the Nepalese still working in the Russian Army.

According to reports, four Nepali soldiers have been held hostage by Ukraine recently.

Nepal has formal treaties with the United Kingdom and India for recruitment of its citizens in their armed forces. However, the introduction of the Agniveer scheme by India has affected the recruitment of the Gorkhas in the Indian Army, sources said.

A senior official in the Nepal Foreign Ministry told The Indian Express that lack of opportunities has driven many youths to join the armed forces and government and private security services in over a dozen countries.

In addition to India and the UK, Nepal citizens are also working in the forces of France, the US, Australia, the UAE, Qatar, Singapore, Brunei, Bahrain, Seychelles, Russia, Ukraine, and some private security companies, sources said.
