Italian mafia boss who escaped prison using bed sheets last year recaptured in France

Italian mafia boss Marco Raduano, who escaped a Sardinian prison using bed sheets in February last year, was recaptured in France, BBC quoted French and Italian authorities as saying on Friday.

Recognized as ‘dangerous’ on Europol’s list of Europe’s most wanted criminals, Raduano had used knotted bedsheets to climb down the walls of the prison’s high security wing.

Said to be the boss of the Italian crime syndicate Foggia, he was arrested on Thursday in Aléria while dining with a young woman in a restaurant in the French island of Corsica, the AFP reported.

Referred to as the “fourth mafia”, the syndicate is a criminal organisation operating in the Foggia province in Italy.

According to Europol, the European Union’s law enforcement agency, Marco Raduano was sentenced to 24 years in prison for drug trafficking,  holding illegal weapons, and other crimes.
