US presidential election watch | Trump steps up attacks on Nikki Haley; Tucker Carlson could have a shot at VP post, says Trump Jr

Post At: Jan 19/2024 05:10PM

From rumors of former Fox News show host Tucker Carlson being Donald Trump’s running mate to Trump trying to poach Nikki Haley’s donors, here are some key stories to follow in the run-up to the US Presidential elections.

Donald Trump’s son says Tucker Carlson as US Vice President ‘on the table’

Donald Trump Jr, son of former US President and Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump, said that conservative media person Tucker Carlson could make a good vice presidential running mate for his father.

Trump Jr was responding to a question on conservative cable channel Newsmax, reported The Hill. “I mean they’re very friendly, I think they agree on virtually all of these things. They certainly agree on stopping the never-ending wars. And so, I would love to see that happen. That would certainly be a contender,” he said.

Prior to this, ex-President Trump had himself floated the possibility of having Carlson as a running mate “because he’s got great common sense.”

Trump steps up attacks on Haley, courts her donors

Ahead of the upcoming New Hampshire primary, Donald Trump’s campaign has stepped up attack on former UN ambassador Nikki Haley by courting her donors, bashing her in TV ads and using racial-themed dog whistles that mock her heritage, said a Reuters report.

The report quoted multiple donors to the Haley campaign as saying that they have been contacted by Trump’s team. “I get calls all the time,” said Fred Zeidman, a longtime Haley fundraiser from Texas who said Trump’s allies tell him: “‘We’re going to win. You’re going to lose. Don’t you want to be on the right team?'” Andy Sabin, a metals magnate and Haley backer, told Reuters that he, too, has been contacted by Trump’s allies but isn’t ready to jump.

He also targetted Haley’s Indian heritage — in a post on the Truth Social media platform, Trump referred to her as ‘Nimrada’. Haley, who was born Nimarata Nikki Randhawa, took her husband’s surname. She has said several times that she goes by her middle name.

It’s Haley vs Trump in New Hampshire as DeSantis withdraws from next primary

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signalled that he would largely bypass the New Hampshire primary next week and instead would focus on South Carolina where the Republican presidential primary is scheduled for February 24.

The move makes it a direct contest between former president Donald Trump and Indian American Nikki Haley for the crucial Republican presidential primary in New Hampshire on January 23. The latest poll released Wednesday showed that Trump and Haley are tied in this State with both polling 40 per cent each. (PTI)
