Kremlin announces no interest in US presidential debate between Trump and Harris

The Kremlin announced on Tuesday that it will not be observing the upcoming U.S. presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov stating that the debate is a matter solely for American voters.

This announcement comes after recent remarks by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who made a tongue-in-cheek comment expressing a preference for Harris to win, and referred to her laugh as “infectious.” In response, the White House had called for Putin to refrain from commenting on the US election, underscoring the need for the election to remain an internal affair.

The debate, set to take place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, is scheduled for Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET (6:30 a.m. IST on Wednesday). The 90-minute event will be moderated by ABC News’ David Muir and Linsey Davis and will occur without a live audience.

This will be the first direct debate between Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and Republican contender Donald Trump. Although the debate rules prohibit the candidates from asking each other questions directly, both will have the opportunity to present and contrast their policy positions.

Harris’ team has expressed concerns about the debate format, particularly regarding the use of muted microphones, which they fear might limit her ability to engage fully with Trump. In contrast, Trump’s campaign has agreed to adhere to the same debate rules as those applied in previous debates.
