The United Arab Emirates’ National Center of Meteorology (NCM) on Tuesday, issued alerts for raised dust and dust storm for several regions till Wednesday. It further stated that hefty winds have led to a fall in horizontal visibility to less than 2,000 meters, the Khaleej Times reported.

The NCM forecast stated that the northwesterly winds, with an outreach speed of up to 40km/hour carrying dust and dirt, is likely to last till Wednesday evening.

While partly cloudy and light rain conditions were forecast over some northern and eastern areas for Tuesday, fog or mist is predicted over coastal and internal areas till Wednesday, with probable humidity at night.

In the aftermath of the unprecedented torrential rains last week, the Dubai International Airport has managed to resume full operations in just a week after the resultant floods left thousands of passengers stranded. The airport returned to its normal flight schedule, handling around 1,400 flight movements every day.

Dubai Airport CEO Paul Griffiths said, “It has been the most challenging adverse weather event we’ve had to navigate, and our people and partners worked tirelessly to keep the operation running and to assist our guests.” He said that 31 flights were diverted to Dubai World Central (DWC), and by April 19, all guests at the airport were successfully supported and continued onwards to complete their travel plans.

The UAE recorded the heaviest rain ever after a severe thunderstorm hit the country on Monday (April 15) late night, killing at least one person, causing damage to homes and businesses, and bringing air travel to a standstill in Dubai.

According to the state-run WAM news agency, the rain was “a historic weather event” that surpassed “anything documented since the start of data collection in 1949” – that was before the UAE was established in 1971.
