Nepal: Cops use force on pro-monarchy protesters, RPP wants minister to quit

Hundreds of protesters demanding the restoration of the monarchy in Nepal clashed with police in Kathmandu on Tuesday. The Rashtriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), the fifth largest in Parliament, which organised the protest, demanded resignation of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane for the police action.

“We had submitted a 40-point charter of demands a month ago that included declaring Nepal a Hindu country with monarchy as guardian. Home Minister Lamichhane must resign or he should be sacked,” RPP chief Rajendra Lingden said.

The Nepali Congress, the main Opposition party, has already been demanding Lamichhane’s resignation seeking a parliamentary investigation for his alleged involvement in the cooperative scam.

The House of Representatives could not transact the business on Tuesday as the Nepali Congress created a ruckus after the government rejected a parliamentary probe into the alleged scam. Lamichhane declined the reisgnation demand.
