Four United Nations (UN) observers were wounded on Saturday when a shell exploded near them as they were carrying out a foot patrol in southern Lebanon, the UN peacekeeping mission said, adding it was still investigating the origin of the blast.

Two security sources told news agency Reuters that an Israeli strike Saturday hit a vehicle carrying UN observers outside the southern Lebanese border town of Rmeish. However, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) has denied the reports.

“Contrary to the reports, the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) did not strike a UNIFIL vehicle in the area of Rmeish this morning,” the military said on Saturday.

The UNIFIL statement said the targeting of peacekeepers is “unacceptable.”
