As celebrations building up to Easter Sunday commence around the world, the British royal family will see muted revelries amid health concerns of senior members.

An occasion that sees the presence of the entire royal family, the Easter Sunday church service this year will see smaller attendance, The Buckingham Palace said. King Charles III, who was diagnosed with cancer in February, will attend alongside Queen Camilla, days after he greeted the nation with a recorded Maundy Thursday message.

The 75-year-old monarch spoke of continuing to serve the nation with his “whole heart”. “In this country we are blessed by all the different services that exist for our welfare. But over and above these organisations and their selfless staff, we need and benefit greatly from those who extend the hand of friendship to us, especially in a time of need,” he said.

King Charles has been conducting small audiences since his cancer diagnosis, including the Korean War Veterans reception, Commonwealth Day service and the memorial for the late King Constantine in Windsor.

In another historic first, King Charles was represented at the royal service by wife, Queen Camilla, who stepped in to conduct the ritual of handing out Maundy money to the number of people matching the age of the monarch, which meant 75 men and women received the symbolic royal gift.

Further, Princess Kate, who recently announced her cancer diagnosis, is on a hiatus from public duties till her recovery and will not be present at the service. William and Kate, the Prince and Princess of Wales, along with their three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis – are reportedly spending time together at Sandringham estate in Norfolk.

In a video on social media last week, Kate had detailed her health struggles, mentioning the discovery of cancer after her “planned abdominal surgery”. Praising Prince William for staying by her side, Kate said she wants to stay out of the public eye till recovery. “We hope you’ll understand that as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment,” she said.

The Easter Sunday service will be held at a private chapel at St George’s Chapel, a 14th century building located in the Lower Ward of the castle.
