The mysterious street artist Banksy has confirmed his authorship of a new artwork that emerged in north London on Sunday. Before and after images of the mural in Finsbury Park were shared on social media by the artist on Monday.

The artwork features green paint sprayed on a wall to resemble foliage, positioned behind a cut-back tree. Adjacent to the tree is a stencil of a person holding a pressure hose. Local residents have expressed pride in their street being chosen for the mural, with Wanja Sellers stating, “It feels like a personal message to us residents, we just feel so proud.”

Crowds have gathered to view the mural on Hornsey Road in Finsbury Park since its appearance on Sunday morning. According to a BBC Radio London report, there were at least 30 people present at any given time.

The mural depicts a “great arterial spray of green paint” across a white wall, accompanied by a “classic Banksy-style stencil,” according to James Peak, creator of the BBC Radio 4 series The Banksy Story. Peak suggests the artwork may have been created using a pressure hose or fire extinguisher.

Notably, the colour of the green paint matches that used by Islington Council for signs in the local area, highlighting Banksy’s meticulous attention to detail.

Islington councillor Flora Williamson taking to BBC expressed excitement at having a Banksy artwork “right in the middle of social housing and one of the poorest parts of the borough,” adding that it adds intrigue, culture, and vitality to the area.

Islington Council has confirmed that its graffiti removal team will not remove the artwork. The council notes that the cherry tree depicted in the mural is approximately 40-50 years old and in declining health. Despite this, the council has been maintaining and pruning the tree for safety and longevity.

Banksy typically confirms his works through his website and social media. In this case, the artist shared images of the mural on Instagram without any caption.
