Footage has emerged of what appears to be a Russian Il-76 transport plane crashing after take off from an airbase in the city of Ivanovo to the northwest of Moscow on Tuesday.

The cause of the incident is unknown.

Several videos taken in the area show the aircraft descending with a fire under one wing and debris falling from the plane. The aircraft reportedly crashed nearby producing a large black smoke column.

The incident appears to add to Russia's growing non-combat aviation losses, with Newsweek finding in August that at least one in five plane losses since the start of Ukraine war were either self-inflicted or accidental.

This is a breaking story and will be updated shortly.
