In recent weeks, a number of celebrities have shared their thoughts on the Israel-Hamas war. Whether supporting Israel, Palestinians or choosing to remain neutral, several famous faces have come under fire for speaking out about the conflict—with many losing fans and followers in the process.

The latest star facing cancelation calls is actress and activist Susan Sarandon, after the 77-year-old declared support for Palestinians on social media.

On October 7, Hamas led a surprise attack on Israel by land, air and sea—the deadliest Palestinian militant attack on Israel ever. Israel subsequently fired substantial airstrikes on the Gaza Strip. Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, declared his country is "at war" and has suspended supplies of medicine, food, fuel and energy into Gaza.

On October 13, the Israeli military ordered 1.1 million people in Northern Gaza—almost half of the Gaza Strip's total population of 2.3 million—to relocate to the south, while on November 9, Israel agreed to four-hour operation "pauses" to allow humanitarian aid to reach Gaza civilians.

As of November 10, at least 1,400 people have been killed in Israel, the Associated Press reported—many of whom died in Hamas' initial October 7 attacks. More than 11,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Taking to X—the social network formerly known as Twitter—on November 4, Sarandon reposted a photo of herself on stage at the #March4Palestine protest in Washington, DC.

"You don't have to be Palestinian to care about what's happening in Gaza," she wrote alongside the snap with members of the Palestinian Feminist Collective. "I stand with Palestine. No one is free until everyone is free."

Newsweek has reached out to Susan Sarandon for comment via email.

Since being shared, Sarandon's post has received 6.7 million views and over 12,000 comments. Nevertheless, her post and attendance at the march divided followers.

"What do you mean by 'Free Palestine'? Do you want Hamas to govern it?" wondered Madeleine Hubbard.

"You stand with murderers?" asked @razblizovsky.

"The Israeli hostages who were kidnapped by Hamas aren't free," said Scottergate, referencing the 242 hostages taken by Hamas in the initial attacks, only five of which have been released so far.

"You don't ask for the release of the hostages or condemn Hamas for the massacre? What a truly sad person you are!" said Scott McKenzie.

"People in Hollywood's are the most unqualified to talk about anything," commented Juan Valverde.

Michael Hintze agreed, writing: "Proving once again that most celebrities have no contact with reality."

However, some users praised The Rocky Horror Picture Show star, with Reem Al-Harmi writing: "Thank you, Susan. I wish many other celebrities have your courage and your compassion."

"Thank you for your humanity and for speaking truth to power," said Dr. Hala Taweel, while Imane Ibrahim commented: "We love you Susan."

Sarandon has always been vocal about her political beliefs and has championed several causes during her career in the public eye. She has previously acted as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, and in 2006 was honored with an Action Against Hunger Humanitarian Award.

Her decades of activism have spanned LGBTQ rights, feminism, civil rights, and fighting to end the death penalty.

This also isn't the first time Sarandon has expressed support for Palestinians. In December 2021, the Oscar winner tweeted a graphic of South African anti-apartheid activist Desmond Tutu that read: "Israel will never get true security and safety through oppressing another people. A true peace can ultimately be built only on justice."

She has also previously applauded supermodel Bella Hadid—daughter of Palestinian American real estate mogul Mohamed Hadid—for her advocacy work and for "having the bravery to stand in solidarity with her people."
