Ukraine has launched drone attacks on three military airfields in Russia, one of which hosts aircraft that can carry hypersonic missiles, it has been reported.

As Ukraine carries on with its incursion into Russia's Kursk region, Kyiv is continuing with drone attacks within Russia, often targeting military and infrastructure sites in strikes aimed to hurt Moscow's war machine. Newsweek has contacted the Russian Defense Ministry for comment.

Russian officials frequently say that air defenses have intercepted Ukrainian drones, even as images of destruction are shared on social media. On Tuesday, Russia's Defense Ministry touted success on Tuesday in thwarting the attacks by drones and Tochka-U tactical missiles.

However, social-media accounts told a different story. The Astra telegram channel said that Ukrainian drones attacked an airfield in Borisoglebsk in the east of the Voronezh region, posting video footage of what it said showed explosions and gunfire.

Another military airfield in the region, Baltimore, was also attacked, according to the Telegram channel VCHK-OGPU, which is thought to have links to Russian security agencies. "The Voronezh region has been under attack by drones all night," its post said.

"Residents can hear explosions, several fires are visible," the post added. "Presumably, one of the targets of the attack was the Baltimore military airfield," which hosts Sukhoi Su-34 and Su-24M aircraft.

Meanwhile, the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Gleb Nikitin, said on Telegram on Tuesday there had been an overnight drone attack on the Kulebaksky district, which is where the Savasleyka air base is located.

The site is over 400 miles from the Ukrainian border and as the Defense Express reported, hosts Mikoyan MiG-31 aircraft, which can carry the Kinzhal hypersonic missiles that Russia has been using during the war.

Nikitin said on Telegram that Russian "air defense and electronic warfare systems are working this morning to suppress the attack of aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicles."

"All measures are being taken to minimize the consequences. According to preliminary information, there are no casualties at the moment," Nikitin added.

Alexander Gusev, the Voronezh governor, said that more than 35 Ukrainian drones attacked the region from Ukraine but "due to the well-coordinated work of our air defense forces, there are no casualties," although debris had damaged buildings.

"The danger of a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) attack in the region still remains," Tuesday's post added. The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Telegram that, as well as Voronezh and Nizhny Novgorod, Ukraine staged attacks on the Belgorod, Bryansk, Oryol and Rostov regions. "Air defense systems on duty destroyed four tactical missiles and 117 aircraft-type UAVs," the statement said.
