Ukrainian Soldiers Ambush Russians After Capturing Enemy Radio

Ukraine's military has released a video showing its forces ambushing Russian troops after capturing an enemy radio.

The video was published by Ukraine's 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, a Ukrainian Ground Forces brigade formed in 2022—the year Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The clip was shared on X, formerly Twitter, by user Dmitri from War Translated—an independent project that translates materials about the war.

"Moment the Ukrainian soldiers captured a Russian radio and tricked two Russians into not shooting at them. Upon getting closer to an enemy treeline, the Ukrainians opened fire. This, in addition to drone strikes, forced Russians to retreat," he wrote, noting that the footage was filmed near Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region.

Russia launched an offensive into the Kharkiv region in early May, seizing a number of villages on Ukraine's northeastern frontier and forcing thousands of civilians to flee.

But on June 8, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia's offensive had failed.

"A very significant result is that the Russian army failed. The direction is strengthened. And it will be strengthened more," Zelensky said after a meeting with Ukraine's army chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi.

The Ukrainian leader told reporters on Thursday that he believes Russia will no longer attempt to seize the region, and that Putin's new goal is to capture Pokrovsk in the eastern Donetsk region.

Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk regions form the Donbas. The Kremlin has been pushing for the total capture of the regions since Russia's initial invasion of eastern Ukraine in 2014.

"The entire eastern front is challenging. The main objective today, after their failure to capture Kharkiv, which we understand is no longer feasible, has shifted," Zelensky said.

"Their primary focus is no longer the entire east, though Sloviansk is not excluded. However, I would say that today Pokrovsk is their priority. The Pokrovsk front and the city of Pokrovsk are their main targets."

Russia's "largest concentration of personnel, weapons, and all their available resources are now focused on the Pokrovsk front," he said.

Zelensky previously said that Russian losses during its Kharkiv offensive were eight times higher than Ukraine's. Newsweek could not independently verify the claim and contacted Russia's Defense Ministry via email for comment.

On Monday, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) think tank said Russian troops have been pushing to encircle Kyiv's forces in the Pokrovsk direction.

Russian forces currently hold positions in western Novoselivka Persha—located northwest of of the town of Avdiivka—"confirming that Russian forces recently seized the entire settlement," the ISW wrote.
