A Ukrainian drone attack has targeted the Bryansk region in the latest aerial barrage by Kyiv's forces within Russia's territory, it has been reported.

"Ukrainian terrorists continued their attempts to attack our region with the help of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles)," wrote Bryansk Governor Alexander Bogomaz on his Telegram channel.

The region borders Ukraine's Chernihiv oblast to the south and has been among Russian areas close to the frontier that have faced attacks in recent months.

Bogomaz said that five districts had been attacked by drones on Friday night but within an hour, Russia's air defenses had "destroyed" 12 of them. He later posted that a kamikaze drone had destroyed a residential building, though there were no casualties.

The Russian Defense Ministry also said in a statement that "during an attempt by the Kyiv regime to carry out terrorist attacks" 21 drones had been destroyed between 9 p.m. and 11.40 p.m. on Friday.

Newsweek has contacted the Ukrainian Defense Ministry for comment.

Drone strikes and shelling attacks also reportedly took place in the Belgorod region overnight Friday. Social media users posted images of another alleged Ukrainian drone attack on a military airfield in Dyagilevo, near Ryazan southeast of Moscow.

Russian authorities said that Ukrainian drones had been intercepted in the attack amid reports that their target was the training center for Russia's strategic bomber force which hosts Tupolev bombers.

Getting clear information on reports of drone strikes in Russia can be tricky, with Ukraine often not claiming direct responsibility for them while Russian authorities frequently say that air defenses have managed to down most or all of them.

But Ukraine has stepped up drone attacks within Russia, in particular on its energy infrastructure such as oil processing facilities and military facilities, which have delivered blows to Moscow's war machine.

Ukrainska Pravda reported on Saturday that Ukrainian reconnaissance drones had struck a Russian long-range strategic bomber near the Arctic city of Murmansk.

Citing Ukrainian military intelligence, the outlet said a Russian Tupolev TU-22M3 "was struck at the Olenya military airfield, the base of the strategic aircraft of the Russian occupiers."

Russia has used drones and missiles repeatedly to target Ukrainian infrastructure such as energy facilities.

However, Ukrainian armed forces Lieutenant General Oleksandr Pavliuk touted Kyiv's success in destroying Russian drones over the last week using electronic warfare (EW) units. In a post on Facebook, he said that Ukraine had used the capabilities to disable 7,916 Russian drones between July 18 and 24.
